@murosinvisibles i love it when western journalists criticize Bukele, but leave out the context of why such measures are necessary to maintain stability in the country.

He isn't doing this for no reason, El Salvador has a serious gang problem caused by mass deportations of Salvadoran refugees from the US after they fled US-funded death squads in El Salvador during the Civil War between a communist people's movement and right wing oligarchs with millions of dollars per-day in US funding and arms.
After 30 years of gang violence, El Salvador has re-established the rule of law. They have re-worked their justice system to be both self-sustaining and rehabilitative. The ex-gang members are paying their debt to society through public works programs that grant them expedited release.
FMLN and ARENA have known ties to gangs. The supposed "hijinks" regarding Bukele's reelection are nothing in comparison to the millions of dollars and millions of lives stolen by the corrupt politicians and their gang connections. -

@shansterable @feditips personally, i consider all of my posting and presence on the fediverse as ephemeral so i just backup my follows & blocks every once in a while so i don't lose track of people if something happens.
i would like to see more progress on the nomadic identity stuff, but i can't personally do anything about it at the moment. though i am (slowly) pursuing some fediverse enhancements, so maybe it'll be something that i can look into lending a hand on in the future. -

@shansterable @feditips afaik there isn't one atm. i think some instances let you export your posts, follows, blocks, &c. but without access to the origin server to say "i moved to HERE" nobody will automatically migrate to the new account.
there have been some proposals to move closer to what the nerds call "nomadic identity" where you really can just move your account freely even in the case of a server failure. its a bit complicated, & its pretty much been stalled since its inception.
imo the best way to prepare at the moment is to have alts prepared that you can easily jump to if you're worried about server failure. -
