If some people say the #fediverse is a left-progressive project, it only shows how successful we collectively are to block the Nazis. Loads of far-right instances and users exist in the fediverse. Gab, anyone? But defederation and blocking makes that part invisible to most of us. They still exist and federate amongst themselves. ActivityPub, the protocol, is neutral. We decide what we want and not want. The fediverse is a herd of Venn diagrams, not a closed circle.

FTR — I have used RSS and Atom feeds since many years and continue to do so and make sure my websites offer feeds. I have never used Google Reader. Open Standards are bigger than commercial products. Simple.

So what happened in the #Facebook #meta #fediverse conference call yesterday? Has someone from our (the fediverse) side put out a blog post? Or did the NDA work?

Don't be naive, people. #Facebook is only interested in collecting more data and to connect that data to profiles to feed to the ad machinery. If #ActivityPub can be used for that, they will give it a try. That's it. That's all. It's still Facebook.

#UnpopularOpinion Running your own #Mastodon instance really isn’t that big a thing. If you can work with WordPress — you’re set, IMHO. Book your instance as a service, so you don’t have to care about the complicated parts. I am a happy and proud customer of @mastohost. Do it for yourself and, say, max 5 friends or family members. I guess I or @aral should write a blog entry on how we work with our small instances to show you it’s really not magic.

I don't really understand the attacks on the mastodon app. There are many apps out there. Nobody is forcing you to use their app or to use mastodon.social. The fediverse is bigger than any one instance or app. Let's build a bigger fediverse and not fall into the trap of infighting, OK? #UnpopularOpinion

(really reminds me of the Linux Distro Wars that drove many, many willing new users away. No matter which distro or desktop environment they liked, there was always someone telling them they were doing it completely wrong and should instead use a different distro or desktop environment. This was NEVER helpful, IMHO)

What is does show however is that the next iteration of the fediverse should really focus on empowering the individual user and not focus power at the instance admin/owner. Federation is a step towards more decentralisation, but really only a step. More steps to follow!

And finally: This all IMHO. My personal frustration. The web wasn't created to be an invasive data collection engine in the hands of a few. It became what it is for many reasons. But it doesn't have to stay that way. Do your little part. Create static pages whenever that's sufficient. Resist including external scripts/tracker stuff. We can return to a #BetterWeb :) Yes, I am that optimistic!

Every time you see such a cookie consent pop-up, you know you are on a website that has accepted to share your data with some data collecting entity. That they are willing to hand over parts of the page content to be filled by a 3rd party. And allow that 3rd party to aggregate and sell their visitors data to the highest bidder. So stop blaming "the EU" and ask yourself if this is the internet we want.

The ad/tracker "industry" used the same tactics to ruin the DNT (Do Not Track) flag that we had years ago. Because they simply don't WANT to give users an option to just say no. And they have convinced their customers that "enhancing" the web with these popups is the only acceptable way to work. And these customers just accept that.

To make this very clear: user/visitor consent is only needed for data typically going to 3rd parties. All cookie laws, including GDPR and CCPA, allow essential first-party cookies to be exempt from collecting user consent before performing their actions. So the simple session cookie on your site DOES NOT need a consent popup AT ALL. Regardless of what the ad/tracker "industry" tries to insinuate.

Tech bros love to whine about "The EU cookie policy" that simply doesn't exist the way they imagine it. All these popups are the most radical way to interpret the explicit consent demanded by regulations. An ongoing provocation by the ad/tracker industry to blame their ruthless data hoarding on the EU.
