So I am helping a bit with preparing a #RedHat#Girlsday at our office in #Munich. And we discussed if we should have some cool thingies to show. So proposed to bring my 2 #OLPC. The original (and still working!) $100 laptop. Still the cutest little machine that could ...
I see more and more often that people post bit.ly links here. Please don't. First and foremost — it hides the real URL, so I don't know where I am sent to. Second: you force me to use a service that collects, aggregates and shares data on who clicks what when, which I consider very bad practice. Finally, no matter how long your URL is, it only counts as 23 characters in your post, so no need to "shorten" links [1]
TL;DR post real links and don't spy on me. #kthxbai
TL;DR when EU law references a harmonised standard, that standard MUST be made available to every citizen of the EU. For free. As it is considered to be part of the law. And thus public interest is a given.
I CANNOT OVERSTATE HOW BIG THIS DECISION OF EUCJ IS!
TIL that this observation I make over and over again has a name.
Observation: Some people are so defined by The Problem that any solution proposal to The Problem is seen as a personal attack, leading to a fight to defend The Problem instead of working towards a solution.
New version 4.2.8 of #Mastodon has just been released, containing some changes to help contain the current spam wave by making changes to account approval and defaulting to NOT have open registrations anymore. https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/releases/tag/v4.2.8
Yes, #Apple will demote WebApps to bookmarks on iOS 17.4 in the EU. Yes, they claim the EU is to blame. And no, that is not true IMHO. What is right is that under the DMA (Digital Market Access) rules WebApps could become a real escape route for Apps to avoid the Apple App Store tax. So better to close that possible loophole and blame the evil EU. IMHO. Reminds me a lot of the Cookie Banner stuff. Same story. Same blame game.
Why are thousands of people (including me) taking the street in the next few days in #Germany? Because far- and not-so-far right people met at a hotel in Potsdam to discuss "the fine tuning of a plan for the forced deportations of millions of people currently living in Germany." Read the whole story at https://correctiv.org/en/top-stories/2024/01/15/secret-plan-against-germany/
This is the picture that explains the situation a lot better. Unfortunately most news reports did NOT show this. What you see here is that a panel cleanly separated, indicating a mechanical problem. This panel covers an optional emergency exit in the frame. So most probably that panel somehow got loose and separated cleanly. Now to find out WHY that happened on a brand new plane. I guess we will know soon.
As always, #avherald has the neutral description of what really happened with that Boeing (do ignore the comments there, though). TL;DR a panel that can be reconfigured as emergency exit in high density configurations dropped out. https://avherald.com/h?article=51354f78&opt=0
According to other sources, the plane did report pressurisation problems on earlier flights. This adds to the suspicion that the outside panel/emergency door became more and more loose over time and finally separated itself. My educated guess is that this problem will be traced to a mistake during manufacturing.
