I still can track only a part of the traffic that comes via #Mastodon (the issue with the stripped URLs in the preview), but as you can see, #X/Twitter was overtaken – by @Flipboard. And soon this traffic will come from the #Fediverse.
But as I've said multiple times, I'm certain, that already the #Fediverse is generating more traffic than #Twitter, but I can't prove it – yet.
Correct me, if I'm wrong, but doesn't that change the whole debate here? Only a small part of #Threads user base will do that. The majority doesn't know about the #Fediverse, and won't care.
But that also means that there won't be a flood of content/accounts/stuff from Threads here in the Fediverse. For the most part, both will stay separated.
For #Meta that makes it substantially easier to moderate for the #Fediverse: They only have to keep an eye on accounts, that opted-in to the federation. (Of course, only if they even want to moderate)
For people (say some journalists), who like #Mastodon and the #Fediverse, but who miss some or large parts of the former user base of #Twitter, this will create an incentive to migrate to #Threads even. There, they have potentially all connections.
If they had hoped for #Threads to federate for getting all their connections back, this is a blow. Now they have to hope, that the people on #Threads they want to connect with, opt-in to the federation.
But it gives another incentive to #Mastodon and the #Fediverse to advertise itself. Not something, both were especially good in the past, to be honest.
And also in English: The nice new preview cards (no irony, I really like them) seem to cut off URL-Parameter. That means that we see less and less traffic coming from #Mastodon on @heiseonline. Because more and more #instances get the update, and more people click on the preview and not the URL.
That means that my little summaries are getting quite worthless: I don't know if we could/or would want to add the URL-Parameter to the previews.
Of course, that's right. I'm spitballing right now: Maybe it would be a good idea for journalists to have an account for "seeing" the fediverse on a big instance, and another one for interacting with it and being "seen" on an instance by their organization (like ours).
Or set up relays to "see" the fediverse but delete the content very rapidly, so to not fill the own server too much. (You don't want stuff from some days ago to reach you, maybe)
Now with more and more #instances upgraded to version 4.2.0 of #Mastodon, you can compare full text #search on different ones: Having multiple accounts, I did – and yes, the differences are rather big.
Once again it seems clear, the bigger your instance the better for finding content in the #fediverse. Especially for journalists, this also implies, that an instance by your organization might not be the best idea. Something like journa.host could make more sense.
At least a part of the this whole debate about #Meta and the #Fediverse seems to boil down to the most persistent argument on #Mastodon: People saying, well ***I*** have all the connections I want here, so why are you complaining about missing people or communities? Meta is so so many people that could get to know and embrace the #Fediverse like many did after the #TwitterTakeover.
It's all about the protocol, not the platform, right? So if one of the biggest actors in the #Internet embraces the protocol, that's a win, isn't it?
Let's see, what they are building with regards to the aspects like #onboarding, #search and yes, #funding. If there's something good, maybe others will learn from it and make the existing instances better (for #newcomers).
There it is: Germany's second big public broadcaster is teasing, that it will start posting on #Mastodon tomorrow as @ZDF That account has 3200 follower, on #Twitter its 1,4 million.
I'm sure it will start to grow quickly and get a headstart on the other big public broadcaster #ARD, which has labeled its first account a test (@NDR).
Of course it would also be a headstart on the big public broadcasters, that are arguing with #Twitter.
Our account on mastodon.social (@heiseonline@mastodon.social) was registered (rather "claimed") years ago, but left dormant until #ElonMusk bought #Twitter. Then I started to post a couple of links to #news articles every day. Our web-devs (namely @entropie) verified the account some days later by adding a link to it on heise.de and giving it the green link.
