If you take the Princess to an Inn and pay for a room, the Innkeeper's commentary a little different... I wonder what they're totally-not-implying with this.
(I forgot to screenshot it back at Rimuldar, so I did it again at Brecconary.)
NO, we are NOT doing a Hauksness run - Level 15 was only just barely enough to handle the Green Dragon, it's not going to be enough for He-Who-Guards-The-Goods.
Instead, we'll be testing our mettle against the field monsters.
And here we have one of those other "things" in the region - the Demon Knight.
This advanced form of Wraith Knight usually does double-digits when it attacks (upwards of 20, like the Knight from earlier), and that's on top of its unusually high dodging rate. Demon Knights are easily the more dangerous of the two new encounters we've seen here - give it a chance to, and it WILL put you in the red (at least at this level).
Demon Knights are why this area isn't exactly ideal for grinding - even if it doesn't kill you, you'll still have to burn through MP and Herbs to heal (assuming you didn't get lucky during battle), and it'll eventually force you to retreat from the area to recover (hope you have Wings, or the Return spell. Leaving this place on-foot while badly wounded is ill-advised).
Had to retreat back to the castle - one too many Demon Knights in the desert became more of hassle to deal with on low MP.
I actually didn't know this dude's dialogue changed when you brought the Princess back... turned into a bit of a salty bitch, hasn't he? His loss - remind me, which one of us took on a Green Dragon (twice, no less) and just barely killed it off to rescue the Princess? SEAT THY PATHETIC POSTERIOR IN THE CORNER AND LICK THY WOUNDED PRIDE, YOU ABSOLUTE FUCKING TRAVESTY OF A KNAVE.
Okay, that's enough bullying the salty NPC - back to grinding we go, and this particular level shouldn't take too long (though the risk of death is fairly high around here).
You can expect somewhat lengthy gaps between snapshots at around this point, because it's mostly level grinding from here, and I don't expect anything interesting to happen over the course of he next few levels (though I could attempt something at Level 16).
I went ahead and put money down on the Magic Armor - at this point, it's no big deal if we lose half our gold on a death, because next armor upgrade we get will be free of charge (provided its keeper doesn't rain hellfire on us when we go for it). There ARE other weapons we can buy later, but we'll presumably have most of the gold for that accumulated naturally during EXP grinds by the time we get that far.
I think it's about time we finally did one of the missions we were initially sent out to do.
On the first floor of the cave, we find monsters we've already met around Kol, but on the second floor, we see new faces like... this guy!
The Drolls are another of Toriyama's stranger designs for this game, right alongside the Druins. Can't quite tell what this one's supposed to be, but it definitely gives quite a scare when your first see it - with eye-stalks like those, it has a face only a mother could love!
On the way back to Rimuldar - taking a quick stop at Garinham (Galenholm in some translations) to pay a visit to Garin's (Galen's) Grave.
For some reason, this guy has a whole-ass labyrinth for a burial site... the upper floors feature many of the same monsters we saw in the western cave, but going deeper brings us new spins on old faces, such as the magic-using DrollMagi, which likes to cast Stopspell (and that's dangerous of your battle tactics are fairly magic-dependent).
A few more Druins in the cave, and a bit of traversal over hills and through forests, and we find ourselves safely back at Rimuldar... and here's our new EXP grinding point: This little sandy path just to the east of town.
Let's totally pick up right where we left off - no, King Lorik, I absolutely didn't get my head handed to me by an Axe Knight. The Imperial Scrolls of Honor say no such thing.
Almost forgot about these guys... not a particularly rare encounter, but they just weren't showing up all that often this time around.
Metal Scorpions aren't the Metal Slime counterpart of normal Scorpions - they'd run at the drop of a hat and give out metric tons of EXP if they were. Nothing special at all.
Those of you with sharp eyes might have notices the strange lack of STAIRS and TAKE options in the command menu - probably should've said it at the start, but I'm not playing with a 100% vanilla ROM (already did that last time).
Meet the most dangerous enemy you can encounter near town... well, it's dangerous up until you use magic to make it stop. Gives good EXP... the gold payout's even better, but that's not what we're here for - we want those levels.
Grinding commentary aside, the spellcaster enemies have some of the coolest designs in the game. The only indicator that these guys even have faces under their hoods are the creepy glowing eyes that pierce into your soul with an icy glare... Toriyama left a lot to the imagination with it came to this particular set of enemies.
In hindsight, maybe leaving that one Axe Knight on the record might not have been a bad idea - it's not taking too long to build up a respectable gold count from what that Green Dragon left us with (minus what we spent on Magic Keys back at the castle).
Two levels in one day - these stats are looking pretty good. Probably don't want to take another shot at the Green Dragon yet, but it won't be long before we're ready.
That region with the Goldman not only serves as a good spot for money grinding, it also doubles as a decent EXP grinding zone - there's one enemy in particular that seems to give a consistent 20 EXP per kill, more than pretty much anything else in the region. We COULD go back and fight that... just have to get out of this cave first.
Back to grinding at Rimuldar... remember, always focus on EXP - the gold is just a bonus.
Might as well document more of the monsters we spot out here - this Skeleton was one of the tougher enemies you could encounter in the region surrounding Kol (specifically the desert to the south of it), but he's one of the weaker encounters around these parts. He's highly susceptible to Sleep, so you COULD cast that on him to knock him out for a few turns, but that's no longer necessary at our current level. Save your MP for the Warlocks.
Level 14 GET - these stats are even nicer, but one thing I think is worth pointing out is LOOK AT ALL THAT GOLD... and that's just from EXP grinding. Stop paying attention to your money while you're out bullying monsters for a while and suddenly you're rich.
There could be a point in the future where we'll have to go all-out on "YOU THERE, CREATURE MOST FOUL! I REQURIE THINE LUNCHEON CURRENCY!" but that's quite a ways off, and it might not even be necessary by then if we're careful about it.
We should probably be at 15 before retrying the Green Dragon, though...
Took me long enough... gained the first level of the day. Compared to the old stats, I might be able to do something with what I've got now - not tempting fate with another Hauksness run, obviously, but I know somewhere interesting we COULD go from here.
Just to the south of Rimuldar, if you REALLY wanted to grind gold that badly, there's a very particular enemy that spawns in the region - not the greatest EXP payout compared to the other monsters there, but the gold value on those guys is nothing short of crazy.
