@coolboymew@All_bonesJones I've usually seen it used as shorthand for Arranged SoundTrack - typically an identifier for official remix albums and the like.
@coolboymew I only call it "hard mode" because that's legitimately how it feels with this particular set of stat gains. The early-game segments start out rough for all build-types, but the difference start to shine through towards mid-game.
In cases like this current run's build, spending a vast majority of the game severely underpowered doesn't exactly give me good vibes about taking on the DragonLord... I might actually NEED to hit max level this time around.
Still grinding away at levels - almost at Level 21, actually. Felt like filling some dead air, so here's something I THINK I might have shared on a previous run.
This site lets you enter a name and see what your short-term and long-term stat gains will be... in hindsight, I should've used it before starting this run, because "Alef" is apparently a hard mode: https://www.woodus.com/den/games/web/dwsim/calc.htm
Once you get to the fourth basement floor, pay close attention to the stairways - starting from the stairs you entered from, there's only one other flight of stars that goes up. Take that stairway, and follow the path from there... it's really straightforward as long you take the correct stairway (going any farther down at this point equals death at our level).
Once you get to that confined space in the second basement, open the box to get the best sword in the entire game (one of the most respected weapons in the series' lore) - we're officially set to use the new monsters we've encountered as EXP grinding fodder.
JUST hit Level 23... for a more strength-oriented build, this would probably suffice for taking down the DragonLord, but that's not how this build is going, so I have to keep leveling - if I could just hit 24, I could potentially get out of Charlock and start relying on Metal Slimes... even then, it wouldn't be fully reliable.
Fun Fact: Naming your hero "Sugiyama" nets you a build that favors Agility and Max MP for long-term stat gains, with a short-term gain modifier of 1... which is actually the same thing you get with "Alef" - essentially another "hard mode" name. Agility influences your Defense Power, but given how awkwardly that particular stat calculation is handled in this version, you probably won't see much benefit out of it until you're VERY high level. Having a lot of MP to play with is the real strong-point here, especially if you have top-class spells like Healmore and Hurtmore, but the levels you have to reach to even GET those spells means you're gonna spend much of the game underpowered (which becomes apparent once you start making shots at bosses).
There's really only one thing we CAN do with the Rainbow Drop, and that's take it northwest of Rimuldar to this particular land formation - using here creates a bridge that gives us access to Charlock Castle.
The road to endgame is officially open to us... not that we're exactly ready for engame yet - there's one more thing to find.
Skipping taking snapshots of the first basement floor since the path through there is actually pretty straightforward - the second basement floor, on the other hand, has something important for us... and it's right there.
We have to go down to the fourth basement and come back through another way before we can get that treasure chest, but once we've got that, we'll basically have free-run of the place (provided we don't go too deep - we haven't seen the new monsters yet, and they'd definitely slaughter us at our level).
Now that we've got the Token/Emblem, we've got to do a bit of backtracking... well, more than "a bit" - we've got to go ALL THE WAY BACK ACROSS THE MAP and head south of Rimuldar.
We've poked around in the area before - there's a shrine down there. If you came here without the goods, the old man would kick you out, but since we've got what we need, he gives us the Rainbow Drop.
Another new encounter! This is Stoneman (no relation to the Mega Man 5 robot master, though his design is similar enough to Toriyama's Golem that I have to wonder if MM5's Stone Man was meant to be a tribute of some kind).
Stonemen are the direct upgrade of the Golem and they can hit HARD... even with the best gear, it's probably wise to run from these guys like with the Blue Dragons. We'll be ready for them eventually (it's a matter of doing enough damage fast enough and being consistent about it).
Just because we're not ready to take on the DragonLord doesn't mean we're not ready to explore Charlock a little... only a little, though. An NPC in one of the towns made a passing mention about there being a hidden passage behind the DragonLord's throne, so that's how you're supposed to know to check here.
Hidden in Charlock Castle is one of the most powerful weapons in the game, a sword said to be able to cleave through steel... and we're gonna be REALLY happy to have that (assuming we can even live long enough to find it).
We've got our first new encounter! Blue Dragons are a decent step up from Green Dragons, but they're not the hardest variant the game has to offer... still, probably best to run from this one for now. They don't do anything differently from Green Dragons as far as I'm aware - they're just a straight stat upgrade.
Yeeeeeup - screenshot kinda says it all. Unfortunately, the enemies in Charlock are still a bit too rough to consistently EXP grind with, even at Level 22... still, it's worth dipping in there to occasionally get some bonus EXP.
Fun Fact: If you name your hero "Toriyama," you'll get a build that favors Max HP and Max MP for long-term stat gains, with a short-term gain modifier of 3. That's a pretty good build - makes for a mildly decent magic-oriented damage-sponge, though it's probably not that great for ending fights very quickly (it probably takes six-or-so episodes to charge a Spirit Bomb, too). You can verify it with the link I posted previously.
Admittedly not that significant of an Attack Power boost, but still better than what we had.
It's gonna be nothing but EXP grinding from here until we're ready to go down to the fifth basement, and none of the levels beyond this offer anything other than stat gains, so screenshots are probably gonna drop off a bit.
Yeeahh... it's looking like I'm probably not quite set for a shot at Hauksness or Cantlin yet, so I've got more EXP grinding to do. I DO know that Level 17 grants the Healmore spell, so that might help, especially since this run favors Agility and Max MP for long-term stat growth.
In the meantime, let's take a moment to appreciate our fair Princess (the sequel more or less depends on it... unless we make a certain terrible choice later on down the road).
I landed a Stopspell - that should've cut out the most dangerous part of the fight...
...never before have I seen an enemy actually realize that its spells were blocked and just go all-out with physical attacks. I might have to be at Level 20 what with how much damage this son of a bitch can shell out in one hit - it was doing more damage than I could offset with Heal.
So, Hauksness is officially a no-go zone... at least not until I can do something to work around Axe Knight's damage, because right now it's looking like I'm not beating him outside of dumb luck.
While there is a significant degree of overlap in enemy types, the road to Cantlin is really all I have left as far as going anywhere new goes... and I can at least have a chance at running from everything, except for a certain boss fight, and I've got just the thing to handle that.
Among the monsters leading up to my destination, we have MagiWyvern. This improved Wyvern variant can cast Sleep... until you put a Stopspell on it. Compared to everything else around here, its physical attacks are surprisingly not that awful.
