John Francis (johnefrancis@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 12-Nov-2024 04:28:07 JST John Francis @nixCraft it's not a normal legal requirement for employees to give any notice in Canada. Pay & benefits must be settled up to the day of resignation regardless of notice, no penalties for lack of notice.
Can be different under a CBA or specific contract terms, but generally it's a courtesy for resignation notice.
Employers HAVE to give 2 weeks notice. Not employees.

John Francis (johnefrancis@mastodon.social)'s status on Thursday, 22-Aug-2024 07:02:15 JST John Francis @foone that's how I want to spend my final days, high on strong opiates, shitting my pants, making the blinds go up and down with a tablet.

John Francis (johnefrancis@mastodon.social)'s status on Thursday, 25-Jul-2024 21:59:08 JST John Francis $500M fine for Weston/Loblaws in 14 year bread price-fixing scheme.
Loblaws revenue is $60B this year. It would have averaged less 2001-2015, but it would have been over $100B, so the fine is 0.005...
Assume you did well over 10y, making $100k/year, accumulating $1M, this would be a fine of $5000.
Hardly a punishment at all.
Loblaws army of accountants and tax planners will carefully shuffle it around to make it even less painful.

John Francis (johnefrancis@mastodon.social)'s status on Friday, 09-Feb-2024 13:05:14 JST John Francis @nixCraft fiat money is infinite, and is only for the dynamic float over a much, much larger asset value base.
It's a phenomenal sum but a $7T investment isn't impossible.
It's a fucking terrible investment idea and would be a complete waste of the real resources that $7T can bring. The real resources need to go into important things that improve the world, like climate change mitigation and a pile of social spending.

John Francis (johnefrancis@mastodon.social)'s status on Saturday, 16-Dec-2023 07:14:52 JST John Francis @Gargron @mastodonmigration I still have a lot of concerns that by making something public, that anyone finding it considers themselves entitled to use it for any purpose. I suspect there are several content licenses that provide solutions. It's probably not a Mastodon concern, but maybe it's something that belongs in ActivityPub.

John Francis (johnefrancis@mastodon.social)'s status on Friday, 08-Dec-2023 04:32:28 JST John Francis @arstechnica good luck getting one to show up. Maybe try sawing a large corner off your motherboard while the system is running, the kernel devs probably didn't think of that.

John Francis (johnefrancis@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 26-Sep-2023 23:47:52 JST John Francis @Gargron @YurkshireLad thanks for clarifying.
Are there separate settings to opt out of commercial search engine indexing via web crawling, but opt-in to Mastodon's search indexing? I want the good people of Mastodon/Fediverse to find my content, but would rather not give it to Google etc.

John Francis (johnefrancis@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 26-Sep-2023 23:43:31 JST John Francis Google has long been present on some instances with it's usual web crawling. I'm uncertain of the latest developments, but I think that mastodon.social both allows the crawlers, and might be selling a privileged view of instance data to Google or data brokers.
I'm fine with crawling and indexing, but the sale of privileged data that helps the ad-hawkers will cause me to leave this instance eventually.

John Francis (johnefrancis@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 26-Sep-2023 23:43:31 JST John Francis Interesting, a high-interaction post I made yesterday has been already indexed by Google and produced a Google Alert notification within 6 hours.

John Francis (johnefrancis@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 26-Sep-2023 23:43:30 JST John Francis @YurkshireLad @Gargron there was some grumbling months ago.
Still, people's labour costs money, I'm happy to be listed as a sponsor, for now.
But I don't want data to be sold into the advertising and marketing industry, even if it manages to be anonymized and GDPR-legal.

John Francis (johnefrancis@mastodon.social)'s status on Monday, 10-Jul-2023 20:16:39 JST John Francis @davidho I still think the popup bollard that only lowers for buses is my favourite. A van tries to tailgate a bus and sneak onto the busway and the bollard pops up and rips off the oil pan, engine dead, oil everywhere, could not ask for a better video.
Still, these narrow bollards are a lot more practical and cheaper.
