This is sort of gross, but lawns were healthier when we let dogs defecate on them. The faeces breaks down over time and adds to the nutrient layer.

Soil health for lawns is rarely done well, often because of low-cost yard crews who blow away all the good dirt.
Most lawns start out as sod applied to the underlying clay or sandy dirt.
If you dump composted manure, mulch, and peat onto a lawn each year and rake it in, the natural growth of the grass creates a thicker layer of dark rich topsoil.
I also rake in coffee grounds when I can. Might as well bulk it up a bit.

Me too. Speaking of soil health, I tend to plant like a pot grower, namely digging out large areas of the clay and mixing it into with composed peat and cow manure. As the plant grows, its roots naturally break down the clay and mix up the soil.

I plant local here, and those tend to be perennials since we do not really have seasons.

In my usage, "lawn" includes the gardens.
I sort of agree, since maintaining grasses is a pain in the ass, but they are also good places for people to interact outside.
I tend to like to rim them with raised gardens, which has the added benefit of nutrition flow into the lawn.
Yes and no. You get some fairly quick feedback but it is subtle.
Not really, but you must be familiar with them. The way a leaf droops, the shade of green, sometimes the smells they give off... it is a science, and people who are good at it become wizards.
In the culture I am from, no.
Fussy plants like growing African violets? Yes, you are a woman or homosexual. For sure.
But plants generally? Anyone can do it, and men are often avid gardeners, even for non-cannabis plants.
Is this one of those "real men don't kiss kitties" things?
Nothing like getting home at 6:30 to have two hours of additional work in the garden.
I suppose that if it defrayed food costs, and one could work fewer hours as a result, it might pay off.
People distrust gardens however because nature is inconsistent. Some years have better yields than others.
We could, we just spend the money on other stuff.
I cannot agree here. Roman roads are solidly built and last centuries.
If you left it up to me, everyone would live in houses with big lawns. More space for wildlife that way.

They are ignoring the grim fact that what you can do that is best for the environment is to keep a car for 20+ years.
@thatguyoverthere @bobdobberson
It is just another tax.
@thatguyoverthere @bobdobberson
The problem is that they stole it to do useless and destructive things with it.
It is really of no consequence. Democracy is a dead man walking.
@thatguyoverthere @bobdobberson
Yeah, they love that one.
I think it makes sense to have number plates, but pollution checks need to be applied in some more systematic fashion since many people simply do not take their cars in for inspection.
@thatguyoverthere @bobdobberson
I consider taxes oppressive, but not all taxes are evil.
Taxes to maintain the roads, fight off enemies, go to space, maybe invent cool stuff like the internet, these I do not mind.
@thatguyoverthere @bobdobberson
I tend to agree here. They took a good thing too far.
The yearly inspections do nothing either since lots of people still drive absolute wrecks.
Depends on the context.
No, each group is primarily interested in its own power so that it controls its destiny.
I think that dichotomy is a spook entirely.
You either have quality leadership or not.
The methods do not matter. The horseshoe theory is also a spook.
