If you added potatoes, sounds like a good soup also.

Economies of scale reward big shops and the effect is intensified after market distortions are imposed.
Most people think they want a neighborhood hardware store. What they really want is two neighborhood hardware stores and a Home Depot.
Otherwise, prices tend to rise.

Somewhat different take here...
Prices were too high. This created an opportunity.
Most of the high prices were driven by the high costs of brick and mortar stores, including staffing.
Get government out and this solves itself.
But in the bigger picture, giant impersonal barns make shopping easier.
Home Depot really took off when illegal labor did, around here at least.

Home Depot is the Walmart of garden stores. There are lots of problems there, but it is also the market leader for a reason, and so we all end up there at some point.

Luckily some of the commercial blends you can get at Home Depot are pretty good and do not appear to be scientifically mutated.
It is a fun crop to grow because when they take off, they really take off, and then the flowers are quite pretty.

I make a roux, then blend the ingredients restaurant-style. You end up with a really thick red-brown soup. No onions. The dominant flavor should be the okra, but too many recipes do not emphasize that.

Later this year I am going to make some gumbo and spice it directly with cayenne, which is basically most of the flavor of Tabasco anyway.

I am pretty lazy with composting. Pile all the organic stuff in a corner, water it, and flip it around every now and then.

Very few people aerate or dig up their lawns either.
If a patch starts dying, one quick fix is to dig it up, mix real topsoil in the useless dirt, and then place the clods of grass back on top.
I agree on mulching and leaves; for me, the best approach is to have a compost dump where I stick all the faeces, sawdust, mulch, and lawn clippings. After a couple years you have good dirt.
