     Mixing a little carbon into something is not a huge change.

     But mixing together all the metal and you get a rusty lump.

     @amerika iron alone is very brittle. That is why we mix it with other metals to make steel.

     Here we go with the false dichotomy again.

     If you make a civilization of steel, it does just fine.

     If you mix random metals and melt them, you get a rusty lump.
