Children do not give enough sport.
Hipsters? Hmm... and they're organic.

I bet most people are delicious up into their early sixties.

Later this year I am going to make some gumbo and spice it directly with cayenne, which is basically most of the flavor of Tabasco anyway.

errante (errante@rot.gives)'s status on Friday, 26-May-2023 22:21:28 JST errante @amerika @ImErin how are you going to thicken the gumbo? i've read a bit about it, and the dish it originates from uses okra (one of my favourite vegetables!) -
≠ (amerika@noagendasocial.com)'s status on Friday, 26-May-2023 22:21:28 JST ≠ Okra is the most perfect vegetable. I can go on about this for days. Also fun to grow. You can eat it straight, which most people do not know.
I make a roux, then blend the ingredients restaurant-style. You end up with a really thick red-brown soup. No onions. The dominant flavor should be the okra, but too many recipes do not emphasize that.

Luckily some of the commercial blends you can get at Home Depot are pretty good and do not appear to be scientifically mutated.
It is a fun crop to grow because when they take off, they really take off, and then the flowers are quite pretty.

Home Depot is the Walmart of garden stores. There are lots of problems there, but it is also the market leader for a reason, and so we all end up there at some point.

They drove prices below local market values (by leveraging debt) which put small businesses out of business. There is no market any more. Now it’s Lowes, Home Depot, and to a smaller extent Ace.

Somewhat different take here...
Prices were too high. This created an opportunity.
Most of the high prices were driven by the high costs of brick and mortar stores, including staffing.
Get government out and this solves itself.
But in the bigger picture, giant impersonal barns make shopping easier.
Home Depot really took off when illegal labor did, around here at least.

They can demand a tax break for example that Joe the hardware guru will never be entitled to, and they can threaten to up and leave if the local government does anything they don't like.
I think the convenience of being able to get everything for a single job in one place led to out of work laborers hanging around home depots to find work. Paying cash means less paperwork for the contractor, and now you can pick up the workers when you go to get the lumber. Illegal immigrants prefer cash work and aren't afraid to do actual work while most American's seem to think swinging a hammer is beneath them.
I agree if government (and international finance) were removed from the picture things would probably resolve themselves. I don't know that impersonal shopping is "better" - and that's not what Home Depot thinks they are anyway. -

I lived almost right next to one that had a drive in loading area where they'd help you load up your truck. They knew the neighborhood kids, and I could even go down and get something for my Dad which he could pay for later because he was a regular and they recognized me as his kid.
There is still one old hardware store that managed to survive by selling the things home depot just won't carry (odd ball stuff for old homes like mine), but everyone else is gone. The only remaining lumber is either at home depot or 84 lumber (lowes is in the next county over). Lumber prices have been stupid for a while. It cost me 80 dollars to buy enough cedar from one of these outfits to build a 3cuft box. They are the reason I own a saw mill. -

Economies of scale reward big shops and the effect is intensified after market distortions are imposed.
Most people think they want a neighborhood hardware store. What they really want is two neighborhood hardware stores and a Home Depot.
Otherwise, prices tend to rise.

Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: (thatguyoverthere@shitposter.club)'s status on Saturday, 27-May-2023 01:05:42 JST Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank dreamed up The Home Depot from a coffee shop in Los Angeles in 1978. With help from investment banker Ken Langone and merchandising guru Pat Farrah, Marcus and Blank opened the first two Home Depot stores in Atlanta the following year.
This is the true nature of Home Depot. It was dreamt up in LA by your man-bun late 70s equivalent, and backed by big money that allowed it to crush smaller outfits without the same resources. I get that doing something better should win in the market, but I think investment/finance debt creates distortions, and in the case where you can distort the market long enough to cause your competition to fold, you can win in what I would consider to be unfair ways. That is to say, I do not think that just because Home Depot came out on top of mom and pop they were the better business model. I do however acknowledge it’s almost impossible to avoid giving them some money every once in a while (really, this might actually be my bigger gripe)
