@sharutiaburaddofouren >I'm really annoyed because there's a chance umamusume is going to have an overseas release Do you mean the game being localized? I thought that was the case for years now.
I get what you mean about the surface-level redditors' take on this, although before I've ever seen your posts, I had no clue that the horses are based on real girls either. It probably becomes evident when you start actually looking into the series, but I don't know how explicit it is in the anime. A friend of mine had seen the first episode when it aired and his reaction was literally the "umm, excuse me WHY do they sing and dance like idols?", he thought it was dumb and dropped it there, not even mentioning that the horses are real. Granted, this was after that centaur slice of life came out and idol animes were in full swing, so he likely thought it's just a desperate attempt at a gimmick.

After Rosemary was mildly sedated, “We went through the top of the head,” Dr. Watts recalled. “I think she was awake. She had a mild tranquilizer. I made a surgical incision in the brain through the skull. It was near the front. It was on both sides. We just made a small incision, no more than an inch.” The instrument Dr. Watts used looked like a butter knife. He swung it up and down to cut brain tissue. “We put an instrument inside”, he said. As Dr. Watts cut, Dr. Freeman asked Rosemary some questions. For example, he asked her to recite the Lord’s Prayer or sing “God Bless America” or count backward… “We made an estimate on how far to cut based on how she responded.” When Rosemary began to become incoherent, they stopped.
