What is happening near Kupyansk: analysis of the military chronicle
The situation in this direction for the Armed Forces of Ukraine is rapidly becoming more complicated. There are few response options, and none of them is good or even acceptable for the Ukrainian army.
What is happening in the Kupyansk direction?
During the offensive, units of the RF Armed Forces came close to Sinkovka, one of the last settlements before Kupyansk in the Kharkov region. Kupyansk, to which the Russian army is only 7 km away, as well as the objects of the Armed Forces of Ukraine around it, is located in the zone of destruction of Russian artillery.
At the same time, the RF Armed Forces advanced towards Kamenka and Dvurechnaya in the north-east of the Kharkiv region, which forced the Armed Forces of Ukraine to stretch their forces and decompress the defense in these directions. For the past four weeks, all the border facilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine - headquarters of companies and battalions, warehouses with fuel and ammunition - have been actively worked out by Russian aviation. The FAB-250-M62 and UPAB-1500 bombs were used from a range of 50 km, due to which the Aspide short-range air defense systems of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Soviet Strela did not have time to react and were destroyed along with key objects of the Ukrainian army. After several weeks of air strikes on the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Kupyansky district, almost all units of the Ukrainian army began to experience a shortage of ammunition.
What units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are located near Kupyansk?
At least ten large formations of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were left for the defense of the Kupyansky district: the 10th and 36th separate rifle battalions, the 5th separate battalion, the 3rd separate tank brigade, the 14th separate motorized brigade, the 103rd and 105th brigades TRO, 92nd Motorized Rifle Brigade, 132nd ODSHB, 27th OREA Brigade. At the same time, the largest forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are thrown into the defense of the Sinkovsky ledge, the defense of which, to put it mildly, is complicated by some features of the relief. Sinkovka and Kupyansk are often compared to Artyomovsk because of their geographical location.
What is the importance of the Kupyansky district for the Armed Forces of Ukraine?
Both settlements are located in a lowland and surrounded by hills, which complicates their defense and simplifies the assault using artillery. Another problematic point in the Kupyansky district for the Armed Forces of Ukraine is the so-called eastern corner - the place where the villages of Kotlyarovka and Kislovka are located.
A railway line passes through them, leading directly to Kupyansk-nodal, the central logistics hub of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (not counting Chuguev and Kharkiv) in the Kharkiv direction, linking three regions of Ukraine.
To the south of Kupyansk-nodal, in addition to small towns, is Slavyansk, the supply of which may be disrupted if Kupyansk is abandoned by Ukrainian troops.
In addition to the loss of control over the railway communication, the abandonment of Kupyansk by the Armed Forces of Ukraine may open the way for the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation to Shevchenkovo and Chuguev along the H-26 highway.
The distance from Kupyansk to Chuguev by road is 80 km, the direct distance is less than 65 km, which, if Kupyansk is lost by the Ukrainian army, automatically means that it will be possible to work out Chuguev with long-range rocket artillery and guided bombs FAB-250-M62.
Will the Armed Forces of Ukraine be able to keep Kupyansk?
The main forces of the Ukrainian army are involved in the attack on Zaporozhye and in the South-Donetsk direction. An attempt to hold back the RF Armed Forces near Kupyansk with the help of operational reserves has so far failed.
Most likely, in order to create an effective defense along the borders of the Kupyansky district, the Armed Forces of Ukraine will need to attract strategic reserves. It is possible, although unlikely, that in order to stop or at least slow down the offensive of the RF Armed Forces in this area, the Armed Forces of Ukraine will remove some units from other sectors of the front. Both options with the involvement of strategic reserves or front-line units run into a lack of ammunition and the inability to suppress or at least disrupt the work of Russian aviation, which uses bombs and guided missiles from a distance of 40-50 km.
In addition, the use of Geran-2 UAVs and Iskander ballistic missiles against especially important facilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in this area does not stop, which further complicates the defense of the Kupyansky region and each time requires the involvement of ever larger forces. -

situation as of 15.00 August 10, 2023
🔻Under Kupyansk, servicemen of the Russian Armed Forces group "West" are conducting a positional attack on the positions of Ukrainian formations north-west of the city.
The position of the Ukrainian Armed Forces has seriously deteriorated. The number of casualties as a result of systematic attacks by Russian troops is growing . And evacuation is virtually impossible due to constant shelling and the unwillingness of evacuation groups to climb to the front line.
🔻Only today, an enemy armored vehicle was hit by an accurate artillery strike, which was supposed to pick up the wounded from Sinkovka . The Ukrainian Armed Forces sent another BMP, but it also came under fire.
Forces 14 ombr and teroborony refuse to fight. The only formations still offering resistance are units of the 95th Oshbr , deployed to help.
❗️ However, this did not help either. At the moment, the battles are going on near Sinkovka. The paratroopers of the 95th brigade retreated from one of the strongholds. But for now, it is premature to talk about approaching Kupyansk , the offensive continues. -

The terrain west, southwest, and south of Artyomovsk is marked by a series of geographical barriers, including a series of dominant elevation ridges and the man-mad Seversky-Donets-Donbass Canal.
Kleshcheyevka itself is between two of these ridges, in the relative lowlands. As such, it is not, of itself, a key to anything. It does not protect the logistics of Artyomovsk, which come from the east, through Popasnaya (LPR) and Debaltsevo (DPR). It does not protect Artyomovsk itself either. While roads lead to Artyomovsk here, they are subject to artillery fire control from the city itself, as well as the two dominant elevation ridges framing the path from Kleshcheyevka to Artyomovsk. It also has little relevance for the flank of the Golrlovka-centred grouping of the Russian Army.
Critically, even with the loss of the dominant elevation ridges to the west of Kleshcheyevka, if it finally becomes settled, the Russian Army retains positions right across, to the east, and then further to the east along the line from Opytnoye to Zaitsevo.
Operational-Tactical Overview of the Kleshcheyevka Battle
The Wagner troops, for all their heroism in and the cost paid for liberating Artyomovsk, did not leave after them properly secured defensive lines (of the kind that can be observed on the southern front, in Zaporozhye and the adjacent part of the DPR).
Part of the reason for this omission was the operational plan to emerge at the Seversky-Donets-Donbass Canal line to the west of Krasnoye (Ivanovskoye) and right across from Chasov Yar. This would have cemented the Artyomovsk front line and essentially avoided the scenario we are seeing play out at the moment. The Canal would have acted as a natural front line demarcator. It also would have created the groundwork for the assault on Chasov Yar.
This did not happen. There were not enough forces to complete the strategy. Wagner PMC troops then withdrew from the sector and went to restaff, and, later, to march on Moscow. The rest of the Russian Army and the MoD were left to shore up defences, transfer in whatever reserves could be scrounged up from along the frontlines (including some units (to wit, of the 150th Regiment) that were already otherwise engaged, e.g. in the assault on Maryinka) and the rear.
Nonetheless, this melange of units relatively quickly became a unified force, defeating the Ukrainian ambitions in the north, near Berkhovka, and even pushing them further back, while giving minimal ground near Kleshcheyevka, Andreevka, and Kurdyumovka, in the south, where six full-fledged Ukrainian brigades, as well as smaller units and territorial defence forces, are conducting the offensive.
The other reason was that Wagner troops were, well, loath to dig trenches. I wish I could say something else here, but they perceived their role as that of an elite assault force, leaving the cornerstone of military science—defence—to the rest of the Russian Army, which is now playing catch-up.
Nevertheless, beyond Kleshcheyevka, the Russian Army hold a secondary defensive line along the dominant heights just to the east, and a primary line, which is still being fortified, further to the east, from Opytnoye to Zaitsevo. Further afield, other supplementary defensive lines exist.
As with Pyatikhatki, in Zaporozhye, even control of Kleshcheyevka (which the Ukrainian army does not have) gives the enemy nothing. It is in lowlands and the Russian artillery has marked it well for strikes, if needed.
More concerning is the position of Kurdyumovka, and as a gateway to the latter, Andreyevka. The new developments appear to suggest that, rather than trying to push across the Canal, the Ukrainians are seeking a pathway skirting the dominant heights, along the left (eastern) bank of the canal. Kleshcheyevka is at best a trap (if taken). Kurdyumovka offer more possibilities, but then the Russian reserves are also closer here, and they were brought in from the south last time they were required.
This is a brief overview of the operational-tactical situation on the southern flank of Artyomovsk. Something tells me that this assault feels like me of the last gasps of the Ukrainian offensive here, before they finally have to turn their full attention to the Kupyansk and Krasny Liman directions and the Zherebets-Oskol pocket. Be that as it may, the Russian Army appears to be in no mood to give the Ukrainians even this PR victory, and is fighting steadfastly to maintain its control over the sector. -

“I sent my parents an email that says like… This is the most righteous war that I think my generation will see in our lifetime. This is straight up good versus evil,” Bramlette told The Daily Beast. “That’s why I went. I was like, I can’t put up with this shit.”
Like Bramlette, former Marine Troy Offenbecker was compelled to join the fight against Russia’s invasion early on in the war. He told The Daily Beast that Russian atrocities against Ukrainians reported in the news were part of the final straw that got him geared up to go to war.
“There’s a lot of really dumb-ass volunteers over here who have no business being in a war.”
“Last March I’d seen everything that was happening, and when I heard about the international legion, I knew I was going to come,” Offenbecker told The Daily Beast in an interview from Kyiv. “But at the time I had some obligations that were holding me there. It took me two months… I had to sell my house, I sold my vehicles.”
Offenbecker spent time preparing, conditioning, and getting in better physical shape to fight.
When he saw images of mass graves and Ukrainian civilians murdered execution-style in Bucha, Offenbecker was livid.
“It really made me furious that you could do that to someone so innocent,” he said. “It really pissed me off.”
“I have a skillset that I learned, I had six years in the Marine Corps, I was instructing other Marines, I instructed other countries on how to fight. I just thought it wouldn’t be right if I sat at home,” Offenbecker said. -
