@thatguyoverthere Problem is, modern protocols and even hardware require a lot of workarounds to function properly in real world scenarios, but linux kernel had already accumulated a sizeable momentum in this regard, which makes it a more attractive choice to most, despite it being an absolutely horrible piece of garbage 🤷

@thatguyoverthere I think it's really good from design (not UI design though 😅) perspective, which makes it attractive for those who want to build things from the ground up — problem is, there are few people like that, most are interested in using something that is only slightly better than what they already have.

@Zerglingman Last time I had to build it on my Mac Mini running Void PowerPC because CUPS has avahi as a dependency and some of its subpackages had a Qt dependency which in turn had qt-webkit dependency. And xbps-src builds all subpackages, not only the ones you need. I've spent a week trying to make it optional, but there is something overly odd about avahi that gets built two times separately from the same source so I just gave up. Now that I have print server running, I'll probably revisit it

TBH had it been not for Fedi, I probably wouldn't even know of Oppenheimer the movie's existence. Barbie? At least I've seen Ryan Gosling wearing pink outfits and I knew it had to come from some movie. Fedi is an invaluable source for all sorts of useless information 😅

@thatguyoverthere , for most — there's likely an underlying problem that is causing it. You can use medication to sort you shit out and be done with it.
Problem is, there is a wide spectrum of such illnesses, some might be treatable. some might be not, some of these people might be easily integrated, for others it will require more effort.

@thatguyoverthere Despite it being actively studied, it's still mostly terra incognita and people often fall for extremes, some might want to MAKE these people behave normal, others might demand taking them as they are — both probably aren't the solution.

@thatguyoverthere Some of it might be treatable, some might be like, following your analogy, pancreatic deficiency — digestion of this person might work mostly like the one of a healthy person, but he might supplement it by taking enzymes, this will improve the quality of life immensely — even if he/her has to take those all his life. He can sometimes live without those, but why?
I don't think that, for example taking antidepressants all your life is necessary, for some maybe it is…

In any case, making fun of this person, pointing finger and shouting: "Look, he's disabled" — isn't beneficial to anyone, integrating him/her into society is, and for both: for this person and the society — he might not be the best farmer, but he could be a way better… software developer than most people having both hands 🤷

@thatguyoverthere Well, by your analogy, let's imagine some person doesn't have a hand. Can he be a productive member of society — sure can, there are jobs other than working in the field. Can he live a normal life — with proper infrastructure, sure can and our society is developed enough to provide it.
So this person demanding to be taken like a normal member of society is quite okay — and that is what most of them want (no reason to pretend that he has a hand, it's obvious that he doesn't).

@thatguyoverthere They did work for me on mac about three years ago or so — there should be nothing Windows-specific in there. I don't believe much changed since then, they probably even improved Chromium compatibility as WebView2 they use nowadays is basically it.
But like you said, in worst case you can just go with a VM. Windows installer doesn't even ask for serial number these days, it just doesn't let you change the wallpaper until activated 😄

Same, I've had a very bad feeling about it. I remember, it was a week before the New Year and a friend of mine asks me if he could borrow a mic and a keyboard stand, my ex had been using them so I go to her to fetch the gear, we spend the evening talking about that, I tell her that this is going to be big, she doesn't believe me of course, then I go to the friend's place and we sit in the kitchen drinking tea, I've been telling him about the virus too and he was:

I have to admit, I must've overestimated COVID, but only because a lot of people around me kept underestimating it, they took more relaxed stance using every opportunity — they just wanted it to be over really bad.
And that is my weakness: I always asses poorly how people take information, you thing that something is going to be a game changer, but most people — they are like that tilt-doll, they return to their old ways almost immediately 🤷

We are truly living in the era of post-truth: facts are nothing if they don't fit the political agenda, if there are no facts to reinforce your point of view — you are free to cherry pick them or even outright make them up.
Rule of thumb here is to not trust something only because it aligns well with your worldview, question even that, and if it doesn't — integrate it into your worldview by expanding it, do not try to dismiss it.
