Modern laptops were built to be carefully taken care of, not used by normies who will clip shit onto their screen, hold it by the palmrest with the screen open, or push the screen open while not holding the bottom or manhandling the thing.
This is all because they're chasing the dragon of Macbooks after that one infamous ad that IMO, ruined the entire laptop industry. Macbook Air Envelope Ad.mp4
@Forestofenchantment The QM wasn't a common mobile chip, it was usually used as an option or on the mobile workstations, gaming laptops, higher end consumer laptops, etc.
Chances are you had the dual core back in the day, but there was one difference. You could only swap CPUs on the Haswell PGA systems like the Thinkpad T440 (not the T440s).
With Skylake and Broadwell, you could no longer do this. You were 100% stuck with whatever CPU was soldered unless you had BGA desoldering gear and could put in all that effort for a CPU upgrade (some X220 owners do this for quads). image.png image.png image.png
@Forestofenchantment The T440p (I confused it with the T440) still had high power SKUs though and socketed CPUs. Gaming laptops and mobile workstations also could be ordered with them, but they were delegated to those for this gen.
This is why some people will do touchpad swaps on them, or will hoard up Dell m6800s/m4800s image.png
@rher@SuperLutheran@reloadedAK it's funny how it's been 10 years and all that's happened is big AAA gaming pushed harder and the same forces going after gaming are now going for your manga

PC-9801 EnjoyerSince this account has been idle for the past few months and I've also been stuck in the wagecage (and since outpoa.st and boks.moe are dead), I'm going to share some of what I've picked up/gotten working over the past year (in between blurs in my memory from this terrible job, home stress and boomer whining, and whatnot). NEC APC III, a rare localized for the west variation of the PC-9801F.An EPSON PC-486GF, a PC-98 clone from Epson with onboard FM and a high-res chip.Obtained and dumped a version of the PC-9801 port of Netware, previously not dumped anywhere.Obtained (and dumped the ROMs for) the PC-9801-14 sound card, a rare sound card featuring a forgotten TI sound chip.Somehow I recapped the sound section on a PC-9821An. Also burned money on an FM Towns and a parts FM Towns for the CD drive, along with an x68000 I'm still trying to get a PSU setup going on. This has been hard because of how jank the X68k is. I still have a scanner I need to set up for the PC-98 that some drawing programs worked with as well, along with a window accelerator on the way. apc3.jpg IMG_20221201_042601.jpg pc98 netware.jpg tower of power.jpg IMG_20230315_032035.jpg eject time.mp4 980114.jpg 980114.mp4 IMG_20221204_000903.jpg
Sorry for the lack of posts in the past year, on top of dealing with fedi instances that kept going down and stupid drama (IRL in the wagecage and sometimes at home) I kept using instances people told me to use that kept going down (and learned my lesson, SJW runs a better instance). The good news is, I'm gonna be posting more hopefully and I'm going to be leaving my wagecage soon.
They are the same people who would bitch at you for having fun back in the day, or who thought that a squirt gun emoji was radical social change. They've been hitting more walls of opposition, but the problem is few people outside the mainstream sphere are developing multiplayer shooters, and especially ones that don't die off after a month. unity_games.jpg
