aaronsw killed himself because he bulk-scraped some academic papers from MIT and MIT had him arrested and the federal prosecutor wanted 35 years for exceeding authorized access under the CFAA. So, now, MIT faculty member David Rand is exceeding authorized access in order to produce more academic papers for MIT. I wonder: if he produces a paper by scraping and then someone scrapes that paper, what happens?
> seems he's doing research into "misinformation" and "fake news" on social media.
He's a Professor of Marketing in the Brain and Cognitive Sciences Department at Sloan. It is safe to reason that (1) he is a psychopath, (2) he has no idea how any of the technical shit works and has a grad student doing it, the grad student in turn having hired an engineer undergrad.
> is there a process for instance admins to opt out of this activity
I guess, per his faculty page, you could just call him, or perhaps email him. Despite scraping FSE, he has chosen an instance that blocks FSE. -

Shit, you were talking about the distro. Disregard my previous answer: Nix is terrible. It was always a bad idea. If you listen to some guy ramble about his Fortnight Robolox and it doesn't make sense, that's fine. -

> Do you feel that there really is a skill ceiling with Nix?
Not sure if you mean "*nix", "Linux", or the distro "Nix". I have nothing to say about the last one, but if you mean Linux/Unix, they're malleable.
> barely enough to carry me beyond a clueless end user
Secretaries at AT&T used to use little Unix terminals to fill out patent applications; according to Ken, this was the first business use for Unix.
> never to the point where I can learn and absorb the necessary skills to deploy a home lab and made effective use of the resources available.
I don't think that's the case; like, walk before you run, doing it in a container in a VM in another VM and then the port-forwarding didn't work, like, that kind of thing happens. It's possible, sometimes likely, that some shit is fiddly or confusing. In half the languages, I can't quite remember how switch/case worksⁱ: I have to look it up almost every time. Some shit is fiddly.
ⁱ C: switch, case, fallthrough, break required. Ruby: case, when, no break, no fallthrough. Go: switch, case, no break, no fallthrough. The shell: "case $thing in", "*))", no break but clauses are terminated with `;;`. I know JS has it, I do not know what it *is*. Lisp doesn't have it, but cond does more or less what you want. I think Forth has it but I think you just use a lookup table if you really want that kind of thing. switch/case may be more like "if you've only seen one dog, it's easy to remember what color it was" but off the top of my head, I don't remember what the arguments are to get qemu to forward just one port. -

Incidentally, he was scraping some Spinster user's profile from FSE, @Piss_Ant. -

> Weed was more fun when it involved being naughty.
That part was fun, but there's a lot of illicit stuff you can get up to. Basically I managed to land "enough weed" once and my friends and I were stoned three days a week for three or four weeks and I became acutely aware of how difficult it was to focus for a few days after and I couldn't stand it. -

The drummer is basically providing samples for a mixer to treat like a drum machine now; even in the 90s you started hearing bands complain about overproduction or that their album didn't sound like what they played. -
pistolero :thispersondoesnotexist: (p@freespeechextremist.com)'s status on Saturday, 02-Dec-2023 19:18:45 JST pistolero :thispersondoesnotexist: @mord @judgedread @Christmas_Man Yeah, the thing about the mistakes is that sometimes they go somewhere interesting. You work and rework a song and sometimes it improves the song but in any case, it improves the songs on the following album.
The other thing Beato covered (might have been a different video, and this I don't know for certain and only have his video to go on, so grain of salt) was that the guideline for most studios was that they'd sign a deal for five albums and develop the band without expecting the first couple of albums to pay off, but the studios now have the songs written by guys that wrote hit songs in the 80s/90s and then have a producer quantize it and pitch-correct it and the band is really just a bunch of faces.
The video is a bit long to post here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFaRIW-wZlw .
