Maholmire (maholmire@crlf.ninja)'s status on Tuesday, 05-Dec-2023 15:46:19 JST Maholmire I have an honest question for some of you here. Do you feel that there really is a skill ceiling with Nix? That there comes a point where regardless to how experienced you are with Linux that you won't be able to master all that there is to learn and use with it.
I'unno, could just be that IT was never my calling and the affinity I did has been barely enough to carry me beyond a clueless end user but never to the point where I can learn and absorb the necessary skills to deploy a home lab and made effective use of the resources available.-

Maholmire (maholmire@crlf.ninja)'s status on Tuesday, 05-Dec-2023 15:50:05 JST Maholmire Would probably have a far easier time using something like Arch Linux as a home lab, though I don't have much in the way of options at the moment. I'm on NixOS, so I may as well figure out how to leverage that to my advantage.

Not sure if you mean "*nix", "Linux", or the distro "Nix". I have nothing to say about the last one, but if you mean Linux/Unix, they're malleable.
> barely enough to carry me beyond a clueless end user
Secretaries at AT&T used to use little Unix terminals to fill out patent applications; according to Ken, this was the first business use for Unix.
> never to the point where I can learn and absorb the necessary skills to deploy a home lab and made effective use of the resources available.
I don't think that's the case; like, walk before you run, doing it in a container in a VM in another VM and then the port-forwarding didn't work, like, that kind of thing happens. It's possible, sometimes likely, that some shit is fiddly or confusing. In half the languages, I can't quite remember how switch/case worksⁱ: I have to look it up almost every time. Some shit is fiddly.
ⁱ C: switch, case, fallthrough, break required. Ruby: case, when, no break, no fallthrough. Go: switch, case, no break, no fallthrough. The shell: "case $thing in", "*))", no break but clauses are terminated with `;;`. I know JS has it, I do not know what it *is*. Lisp doesn't have it, but cond does more or less what you want. I think Forth has it but I think you just use a lookup table if you really want that kind of thing. switch/case may be more like "if you've only seen one dog, it's easy to remember what color it was" but off the top of my head, I don't remember what the arguments are to get qemu to forward just one port.† top dog :pedomustdie: likes this. -

Shit, you were talking about the distro. Disregard my previous answer: Nix is terrible. It was always a bad idea. If you listen to some guy ramble about his Fortnight Robolox and it doesn't make sense, that's fine.† top dog :pedomustdie: likes this. -

Anyway, the reason I have nothing to say about NixOS is that if I try to say a word about it, it will come out "neurotic fetishists" and "don't know how the computer works" and "they put a box in a box because once they opened the box, they felt dirty being able to see the contents" and I don't wanna argue with people about Nix being the Haskell of Linux distros and then argue more when people don't think that's an insult.† top dog :pedomustdie: likes this. -

The joke there was "computer guy refuses to acknowledge that non-computer hobbies are acceptable". It's like the English declaring a place uncivilized because everyone drinks coffee instead of tea. I make that type of joke a lot, I go to a sandwich place and they ask if I want mayo or mustard on the pastrami and, as there is only one real answer, I'm forced to conclude that the proprietors are filthy heathens.
That is about as much depth as you'll get out of this joke. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

You know, on my second look at that sentence, I'm revising slightly: that is not a joke. Mayonnaise on pastrami is an abomination and anyone that puts those two things together is uncivilized and godless they probably got their occupational training from a witch doctor.† top dog :pedomustdie: likes this.
