Years ago I used to use Microsoft office, I have never used any Google application for this, but clearly Microsoft was not an option either and years ago when I decided to change all my software to open source projects one of the first things I had to change was my office suite, luckily there are many good alternatives, the first one I tried was Onlyoffice (https://www.onlyoffice.com/), a quite complete suit and with a very good compatibility with Microsoft documents and although it had some problems with the spanish spelling corrections, the software worked quite well and I was using it for a while, until I switched to linux, I am currently using Linux Mint and I will talk about it later, but Mint already comes with Libre Office (https://www.libreoffice.org/) installed by default so I thought ´why install another software if I already have this one` so I decided to start using libre office and I think it was a good choice, so far Libre Office has worked great for me, the spell check works very well, the interface is easy to use and very intuitive and you won`t miss Microsoft at all, you can open all types of documents and is completely free and open source, the only complaint I have would be that there is no version of this for android, however on my phone I use Collabora Office (https://www.collaboraoffice.com) a pretty good project that Libre office recommends on its website and with which so far I have no complaints either, although its running a little slow and I don't know why. Using open source office has been quite simple, projects like libre office are quite complete and easy to use, for example these posts I write in libre office before publishing them here, coming installed Libre office in linux mint saved me a lot of work and made me try an excellent software that probably I would not have tried before.
the truth, stop using google maps was probably the easiest thing in my way to de-google me, OpenStreetMap (https://www.openstreetmap.org/) is a very good and complete service, personally I use in my phone OSMAnd (https://osmand.net/) an application that uses OpenStreetMap maps and so far I have not needed to resort to Google map for anything, and I live in a special country that I never thought I would have such a complete map, as for 3D/Satellite maps I thought for a while to use Marble, but I did not find the version for android and I had no idea how to use it so I discarded it, anyway I have not needed to use it so far, although it would be nice to have it as an alternative to Google Earth. In my mobile I also have installed GmapsWV, an application of f-droid that shows the web version of google map in a restricted way only for emergency cases in which OpenStreetMap is not enough, however seen that the application is only 33 kb and I haven't needed to use it even once I've been thinking about uninstalling it and installing it only when needed.
Something interesting to find in linux is the compatibility layer for window, WINE (https://www.winehq.org/), it is not perfect, I do not use it much, but it is excellent for the needs that one may have, I think in the end WINE helps a lot when you have to use some software that you can not find in linux, however one can consider whether to use it or not as it can weaken a little your security, some versions of linux focus on using this compatibility layer so it is much more similar to window, however I use linux mint and WINE is not pre-installed, so I had to install and configure it myself, nowadays I practically only use it for games, and some little casual programs, but generally only games and so far both wine (and lutris) has been quite useful and surprising, much more than I expected, when I started in linux I never thought I could play some of the games I normally play, but it turns out that through these tools and thanks to the wine (and lutris) project playing has become very easy and much better than I expected. I also run without problem some games like Rise of kingdoms and games I have downloaded from itch.io using wine and without problems, however some give problems with the graphics and well I will talk about this soon when I talk about my experience with Lutris.
really people don't be afraid of linux, wine is not perfect and far from it, but you may be able to run without problem that software that is not available for linux and that you should use no matter what, ever games, personally I have had a more than excellent experience with it.
lately i'm a bit bored and i have some free time, i don't want to talk only about anime so i want to try something different, i'm not a software expert and i'm quite far from being one, i haven't been dabbling in software and similar things all my life so i consider myself a noob so don't take so seriously the things i say i just want to share my experience using free software and getting as far as i can from Microsoft and Google (and obviously Apple) and what kind of software i have been using as alternatives, my intention is just to debate a bit about it and have some fun with it.
it's been a few years since i decided to start changing all the software i use (as much as i could) and start using free and open source alternatives, and the truth is i don't regret it at all now that i have come this far i feel very comfortable with everything i am using and actually i doubt that there is anything that will make me go back, in general I know that many people have no choice but to use certain software, I for example have been forced all these years to use whatsapp, application that I hate and for which there are very good alternatives but unfortunately all my contacts use and I have no choice, impossible to convince them to use something else.
but my real incursion began a year ago when I decided to abandon window and go to linux, and the truth is that I have become very fond of this distribution and I doubt that for a while I will change for something else, I also decided to eliminate google from my life as much as possible, currently I keep my google account and gmail, but I do not use them and I'm only using 3 google services; VirusTotal (due to limitations in my internet I find very useful the hash compare system they use when uploading files), Youtube (as there is no really valid alternative that convinces me) and google service on my android phone (believe me I have wanted to switch to a de-google system but it has been impossible, currently I keep it 'under control' with a firewall).
this is just thread with all the alternatives I use and my experience with each one of them, I will try not to make it too long and tedious, my intention is not to recommend you the software, each one choose which software to use according to your preferences and needs, my intention is only to share my experience and as an extra maybe motivate you to use free software and leave the umbrella of the big multinationals.
the first software or service is the search engine; luckily there are many good alternatives for every taste, I didn't know there were so many alternatives until I started to investigate and some are even better than Google or Bing search engine, the main reason why I wanted to change was because of censorship, so I needed a search engine that did not censor as much as Google and DuckDuckGo was not a good option for this currently I think they even censor more than google, in the end after trying several search engines I decided to stay with Metager (https://metager. org/), a German web search engine with a pretty simple interface but that always gave me the search results I needed, it was privacy friendly, open source and had some good configurations, it also allowed to open links using anonymous proxies, that is until one day.... one day for some reason metager started to give me very bad search results, the links didn't even have to do with what I was looking for, I didn't understand what was going on, it was happening to me even using the German version, so before getting frustrated I decided it was time to change search engine, then I came across Searx, a Self-Hosted and open source search engine and I started to dig into the list of public instances (https://searx.space/), after seeing several red banners typical of this search engine, I stayed with this instance (https://search.neet.works/search) which I am currently using as my secondary search engine since my primary search engine uses only Bing for its results and I really love how this search engine uses a lot of search engines, which are also configurable and has a lot of other configurations, its interface is simple but very nice and tidy, but well recently I found the search engine YOU,com (https://you.com/) and this search engine is excellent, first the search engine does collect some information from its users and I even think it shares some of it with Microsoft, but this can be disabled using the 'private mode', however if you are not interested in this you can create an account and use the excellent benefits that this search engine brings, what I like about this search engine is that you practically don't have to enter any link to find what you are looking for, It is mainly oriented to answer questions and doubts of its users and it also uses an artificial intelligence that can be used to answer questions, this is why I decided to stay with this search engine since there are really many benefits that it brings and after using this intelligence I don't think I will change it for another search engine for now. I understand that the search engine is open source although this is not the case for its IA. The truth is that my experience so far with these two search engines has been excellent, you.com I have been trying it for a short time but so far I have no complaints although the results sometimes launch a little slow, its interface is excellent with everything well organized and getting the information very easy, personally I always use it in 'private mode' and so far I have no complaints with the search results, I guess they will be similar to Bing and unfortunately will have the censorship that this has and hopefully this will improve in the future, that's why I still use Searx as a secondary search engine which so far I have no complaints, is undoubtedly the best search engine I've used of all search engines without AI implemented. Anyway all this about search engines with AI is something that is still young and You.com is also a very young search engine that still needs a lot of development so we can't be so demanding. well, this is my experience with search engines as summarized as possible.
Social Networks; how to live without them right? Well it is not a secret for anyone here that leaving a little bit of social networks like the one with the blue bird can be very good for our mental health, but it is also quite difficult, little by little I have been withdrawing from all social networks that I used to use before, however in some cases I have not been able to leave it completely, currently I use facebook for 'work' reasons but I don't use it for anything personal and I try to use it as little as possible, I still keep my instagram account from which I take some memes from time to time, but this only happens a couple of times in months and now that I think about it I should make a re evaluation of if I really need this account or there is a better place to take memes and videos from and delete this account once and for all. Getting out of social networks has been one of the hardest things I have ever done, nowadays I use more actively the Varis platforms (pleroma instance and forum) and twitter, I thought about switching to a front-end but as with yt I decided to go back to the original platform as it didn't convince me at all, I have an account that is in my biography and I use it from time to time although I don't really spend more than 20 min a day on twitter, I think that for now to reduce to the minimum the time I spend there would be a good option, for this I have started to use more actively pixiv although unfortunately it is not a good alternative to twitter at all, now in no case I use the applications for the respective social networks and I do everything through browsers, this way the tracking and shit is reduced a little. The place where I spend the most time is here, and people sincerely I tell you that you are the best community I've been so far and this is much appreciated and that's why every time I leave I end up doing my best to come back.
In the social networking topic is where I have made less progress in the open source and privacy aspect although I am quite open to recommendations, since the alternatives are not always very good and the front-ends do not convince me at all. For now my next priority is to abandon instagram altogether and to finish my account once and for all.
>since it would be short, I have put together calendar and notes
I've never been someone who uses the calendar a lot so the change has been quite easy for me, but anyway, having a Proton account I can use their calendar also through ProtonCalendar (https://calendar.proton.me/) and it's the application I've been using currently and I don't have many problems with it, for some reason I don't get notifications as they should, but well just open it and the notifications come in, proton calendar is a complete calendar that allows you to sync through your proton account and have the calendar on all devices and it's enough to have a proton account to use all its services. So far I haven't missed any calendar service I've used before. As for notes I have been using Simplenotes (https://simplenote.com/) which I use to store not very important data and it helps a lot to have it synchronized between all my devices, simplenotes is available for many platforms and this is excellent allowing you to have all your notes on all your devices synchronized in real time. To save more important notes I use Bitwarden's secure notes (https://bitwarden.com/) feature so not only do I not need to use any other notes app, but all my notes are secure and kept private and in sync across all my devices. In the old days I used to save my notes locally on my pc, but I have started using these services so I don't have 30 copies of my apps so I don't lose them all over my devices.
Anyway my experience using these services has been excellent, they are very complete apps and there is no need to use closed and not very private apps like google apps to save things as private and important as notes and calendar.
Changing your email for a non gmail may be the most important step in the de-googe process, and the first big step I took, I have to be honest, it was a pain in the ass to switch all my accounts to new email services, but it is also the big step, some time ago I made my switch, abandoning Gmail completely, I currently have a gmail account that I don't use at all and it is replaced by ProtonMail ( https://proton.me/ ) my experience using proton mail has been wonderful, I don't miss Gmail at all and I have everything I need in my proton accounts, I deleted my gmail from my phone and instead I use the proton client and k-9 mail to manage my mails, for more privacy I also use AnonAddy ( https://anonaddy.com/ ) to create anonymous email aliases, I switched from the mozilla service and AnonAddy has been a good experience. My experience with the email switch has been excellent, and I haven't really seen the need to use a gmail account for anything so far, plus the proton mail account is good for all your services including vpn, cloud storage and calendar all with one account.
Although my english and my japanese have been improving progressively even so the translator is still one of the tools I use the most, finding an alternative that is at the height of Google Translator is quite difficult especially to translate web pages, but that does not mean that there are not good alternatives and stop using google for this has been very easy for me, I currently use two three translators, one of them is the already known DeepL (https://www.deepl. com/) which has been by far the best translator I have used so far even better than google, its only drawback is probably not cover as many languages as google but at least it covers all the most spoken and important ones, so when the deepl translator is not enough I use Lingva (https://lingva.ml/) a front-end for google translator with all the functions it has to translate text and a nice and intuitive interface (I like that as with google translator it shows you the romaji of japanese).
Now to translate images the thing changes a little, I have not been able to find any good translator for this function and it would be good if you could recommend me one XD
To translate web pages I use TranslateLocally for Firefox extension (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/translatelocally-for-firefox/) from the Bergamot project and although the translations sometimes are not very good at least it's something... I thought about using the Firefox Translations extension developed by Mozilla but it gave me problems downloading the translation engines so I discarded it, besides I don't like that the application can't be disabled for private tabs.
My experience using these translators has been very good, both translators have a simple and easy to use interface and deepl launches excellent translations and it is advisable to have the paid version although it can be used for free without problems, also on mobile I use the deepL application and it has worked very well, my 'complaint' would be in the translation of web pages, where you can see that there is still much work to do.
So far I haven't missed the google translator at all.
I generally prefer to store my files locally, however I do make some backups to the cloud. Currently for this I use MEGA, for when I wanted to change my cloud I always watched recommendations of Mega, so in the end I decided to try it, and so far I have done very well with this, but, I have learned of all the controversy behind mega and the truth I have begun to not trust them much, so I'm thinking of starting to use Proton Drive which came out of beta recently and is now ready for use, I have seen it recommended as a good option for privacy and security so I may consider making the change soon, the bad thing is that drive is still young and lacks many features, it doesn't even have a desktop application so you have to do everything through the browser and that doesn't give me much trust.
Do you recommend me to change or do you think I should not worry about mega? :zt_think: anything that comes from china does not give me trust :noa_disgust:
I'm going to take the opportunity to tell my experience with antivirus, open source and linux
>keep in mind that I consider myself a total noob in all this software stuff, do not do what I do and do not take into account what I say, talking about viruses and linux is a very sensitive issue for the community and I understand it, but this is just my personal experience and everyone decides what to do at their own risk.
i have been using linux for more than a year now and i don't use window at all, before i used to worry a lot about antivirus but i couldn't find one that i liked and after trying many and not being able to pay for one, i started to think that window already had a free antivirus, and so i started to use only window defender in my pc, of course i trained myself a lot in common sense against viruses, probably the best weapon against this some say and eventually i stopped worrying about antivirus, when I started to switch to open source I tried ClamAV on window, a headache I couldn't even make it work well and it was incredibly slow so I discarded it pretty fast and went back to my window defender, until I switched to Linux, and as linux didn't bring antivirus I started to wonder which one I should install, but things in linux are very different there were not many options so I went back to ClampAV, slow and consumed a lot of resources and did not end up convincing me, everyone even in the linux mint community told me that I did not need antivirus in linux, for the way linux works it is true that it is much more difficult for a virus can do something on your pc, but I think it is a bit questionable to recommend a novice user not to use an antivirus and less in a system based on ubuntu, however not being able to find a decent antivirus for linux I took a decision, I will not use any antivirus and over time I have simply downplayed the importance of antivirus and no longer think they are necessary (at least for me) so I do not use any on my mobile beyond the one that comes installed by default (based on trustlook), of course as I said in the first post I still use VirusTotal although I recommend Hybrid Analysis (https: //www. hybrid-analysis.com/) which I believe is superior and is not google, I use it to analyze links and small files and thus add an 'extra layer of protection', I also started using Firejail, a tool that allows you to run programs in a controlled environment and thus if you get infected with a virus limit this wreak havoc on your system, in fact I run all my browsers through firejail and is an application almost invisible you do not even notice it is there (firejail is also very easy to configure).
To sum up my experience taught me that I did not need an antivirus on my devices, and currently I do not recommend my friends to install antivirus, but if I warn them to keep in mind that if you install things outside the official stores will be running risks, which is quite ironic being that I always recommend that they do not use the play store ...
so far I have had no problems with viruses, not that I have noticed and I'm doing very well this way, so even if clamAV improved a lot I doubt if I would install it, anyway clamAV I think it has a lot to work on especially optimize its performance a bit as it is slow and consumes a lot of resources but unfortunately there are not many open source options to choose from.
I don't trust my ISP, and believe me when I tell you I have reasons not to, so I always connect through a vpn, and if not at least I use DNS over HTTPS using Cloudflare (I also use cloudflare's vpn sometimes but I don't trust this one and I don't recommend it), I also use Tor a lot especially on my phone. I think tor is the key to keep you anonymous, but sometimes it is a bit slow and has its problems, so I also use vpn, sometimes I connect through Nord vpn, but normally the vpn I use is ProtonVPN and I have no complaints, the truth is that it works very well and I don't think I will change vpn in a while. I made this short because I don't have much to talk about here, I don't have a lot of experience using vpn and I have used proton for years, I have never used any other vpn but the 3 I talk about here and the other two I only have for emergency. https://protonvpn.com/
ok I will try to make this shorter because no one wants to read those huge texts. getting rid of google and android has been the hardest thing I have had to deal with in this whole process, I still use a lot of closed source applications on my phone and getting rid of google completely has been impossible. since i switched to linux i have wanted to install a rom also to my phone but there is none available for my tecno spark 6 so i have had no choice but to leave all the crap that comes pre installed from google and more, searching on the internet i found that some bloatware can be uninstalled using adb and i have done that to remove some of it but i have read that it is not recommended to remove google play services this way and that it is safer to keep it updated because sometimes google usually releases security updates on it, so i had to look for an alternative and this is to use a vpn based firewall, I have tried almost all the ones in f-droid but I had a big problem to solve, I could not enable a vpn and the firewall at the same time, plus I also needed to block tracking and ads of the applications I used, but at the end I found the application that brought everything I needed in one and so far it has worked great, InviZible Pro, an application that allows you to connect to a DNS and set rules to block all connections ads and tracking, also includes a firewall to restrict internet access to all that Bloatware junk that brings my phone and also allows you to connect to Tor and thus be anonymous and deal with censorship. After trying lots of applications this was the one that convinced me the most and I've been using it for a few months now. my intention is to buy a new phone and get rid of these roms full of bloatware but for now I have no choice but to continue in this way.
browser, one of the most important tools we use everyday, unless you live in north korea then you are fucked.... i used chrome a long time ago, i had the wrong notion that it was 'the best browser` and my switch to Firefox (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/) was not even because i wanted to use open source software, it was simply because the problems with chrome got on my nerves, it was very slow to run and i never understood why, it also consumed a lot of ram memory, so i made the switch to firefox and it was incredibly easy and so far i have no problems with firefox and i still use it as my main browser both on my PC and on my android phone. Despite how easy it is to make the switch and how complete are browsers like Firefox and Brave people still continue to use chrome despite how problematic it is, anyway who understands society, it is true that in android chromiun is much better than firefox but still so far I have not missed any functionality of chrome, but if you still want to continue using a browser similar to chrome I personally love Brave (https://brave.com/), I personally prefer to continue using firefox but I was using brave both on desktop and android for a long time as my secondary browser, but Brave launched a lot of constant heavy updates (this is not bad) and I barely used it so I decided to change it for something lighter, currently as a secondary browser in linux i am using chromiun which is available in the linux mint software store and developed by the community itself and so far i am going fine with it, on my phone i have switched to Bromite (https://www.bromite.org/), but recently i have been warning me that it is outdated and the truth is that Bromite has not been updated for at least 3 months, this is a problem that i hope will be solved soon, let's see I use to download images from pixiv frequently, and for some reason the mobile version of firefox doesn't let you download images from the pixiv website, but the chromiun based browsers do, it's for reasons like this that I try to make my secondary browser a chromium based one, but I haven't found many good alternatives for android so I may end up switching back to Brave if Bromite doesn't solve this update problem. all along i have been using firefox as my main browser, and i have no complaints so far, maybe a little more customization would be nice but this is actually a bit irrelevant, the mobile version is the one i see a little bit of devil compared to other browsers and i hope this will improve in the future, for the time being I will continue like this and leave brave as an alternative for the future as I want to avoid using chromiun based browsers, firefox comes pre installed on linux mint and receives updates through the linux mint update manager so it integrates very well into the system and runs very well on my dinosaur pc with only 4 Gb of ram and so far I have no complaints. I hope bromite solves this problem quickly and the project is not abandoned because I really like your browser is light and already includes everything you need for privacy so it is excellent to have it as a secondary browser.
>this will be long and I will divide it in parts (in the others I will talk about my experience on WINE, Lutris and things like that that I consider relevant)
When it comes to OS Window (mostly) and Mac have controlled almost the whole market, just like with android, getting out of the control of this monopoly is one of the most important steps if not the most important to start using completely open source, but unlike Android and iOS, changing the operating system of your pc is extremely easy, I won't say you won't miss window, especially if you play games or use very specific programs to work like Adobe's suit, you will definitely have a hard time configuring and installing everything, but do not be overwhelmed and much less fooled, using completely linux and open source on your pc is possible and much easier than it seems and I guarantee it, first believe that linux is pure terminal is a stupidity and a big lie that I also believed, most software already have graphical interface and personally I use Linux Mint that already comes with everything you need included so you do not have to use the terminal or install the most fundamental programs for different functions. However it is true that many of the guides on the internet make use of the terminal, well do not be afraid of the terminal, believe me that when you get used to using it is very comfortable and easy to use, but not always necessary. As I said I use Linux Mint (https://linuxmint.com/), a free, lightweight and low resource distribution and designed for users who are new to Linux and the truth has proved to be very easy to use even more than window with a great level of customization and excellent aesthetics not too far from window nor too close. Also in linux you can make use of Lutris and WINE for games and Window software but I will talk about this later. Linux mint comes with everything you might need, an update manager, a secure software store, an office suite, a firewall, a configuration panel with everything you can configure and customize, tools for backups and an excellent tool called Timeshift that allows you to make a capture of the system to restore it in case you break something and this is incredibly useful for inexperienced users because any problem you have just return the system using this tool, includes the Firefox browser, a player, an image viewer, in short everything you may need, and of course all this can be replaced by the software you prefer. For desktop environments is in 3 editions, XFCE edition, MATE edition and Cinnamon edition, I personally use the xfce edition which is the lightest and is excellent to revive any old pc you have, but the recommended is Cinnamon which is more powerful but has many more features making it more complete and much easier to use, I have tried all three and the truth is that all three edition are excellent and it will depend on how powerful your pc is (although the truth is that Cinnamon does not consume many resources but it is recommended for powerful computers). My experience using Linux Mint has been wonderful, I decided to try linux for the first time more than a year ago in an old pc 2gb of ram DDR2 (a real fossil in which it ran excellent) and I liked it so much that now I don't see the possibility of using window, currently linux Mint is my main system and I don't think I'm going to change it for a long time. Probably what scares people the most is the software, however I have found alternatives for linux to practically all the programs that I used before, besides since I had window I had already started to make the change to open source and most of this software includes versions for linux however in extreme cases you can make use of Wine, a compatibility layer for window software that so far personally has been excellent much better than I expected. es everything easy. (although I have heard that there are many problems with nvidia hardware I have not had any hardware compatibility problems so far).
Gaming on linux has never been so easy, so say those who have been doing it for years, and the truth is that I have been pleasantly surprised, I thought I should forget about playing, Lutris (https://lutris.net/) is an application to run games with better compatibility, it uses its own version of wine optimized to play and can help a lot when the games do not run correctly with the system wine. there are many tutorials on the internet for lutris and certain games, a while ago I tried World of warcraft and it works great using lutris, I am currently playing The thing, an old survival horror game that gave me problems when running it with wine alone because the screen did not load correctly with video problems, but using lutris the game opened without video problems and works perfect, so I have tried some other games and so far all have worked without problems so my experience using lutris has been excellent. i have read in many sites that linux tends to give problems with nvidia graphics cards so it may be advisable to check if your card works properly in the distribution you plan to install, or just try it and that's it, if you have no hardware problems you may be able to play your favorite games without problems using lutris and with some extra configuration steps that are easy to find on the internet. Gaming has also improved a lot thanks to Steam, being able to install it on linux and use its tool proton (similar to wine) to run games with many titles working correctly and without problems. I am not the most indicated since I don't usually play modern games, but I have been pleasantly surprised to run some of the games I like on linux and see that it is possible to play on linux and probably all this will improve even more in the future.
Just an anime fan.I really like anime and i love anime girlsbtw sorry my english sucks [spanish]I post images promoting artists that I like sometimes [Twitter/Pixiv]I talk about animes that I am watching, something like reviews, I will try to be as objective as possible and I focus mainly on helping you to determine if you watch these anime or not, I avoid any form of hate and I am always open to any anime of any format and with any story.I've been watching anime for many years but I don't know as many classics as I might seem, you can recommend me any anime you want I will add it to my list. I have seen thousands and thousands of anime so I can recommend some, or talk about any anime you are interested in, I am always open to debate or discuss about anime.I post any other anime or japan related shit that is interesting.I post anime news but only the ones that interest me, I'm not a media or an anime news account or some shit like that, I just do this out of hobby to share
