Speaking as someone who works on Go, the HN responses are vigorously objecting to things that the proposed telemetry isn't. It won't help sell advertising at all. It is not compiled into a user binary. It is intended to monitor the build chain itself, recording only counters and data-less backtraces from the build binaries themselves.
"Phone home" should be statistical, about once per year, sending previous week's data.

The thing that we would like to do is sample a large population so that we could turn down the frequency and maintain statistical quality. If every developer using Go were opted in, then the sample rate (of a week's summed counters) is 1.6% or less.
The hope is that if the sampling is rare, obviously free of anything like identifiable info (nothing from the user's environment), and smeared just-in-case (weekly sums), then few will care.
