Hi Jason,

Suppose that I wanted my own search engine. I want to enter some URLs index of all of the content I've posted over a bunch of social media, wikipedia, everything2 and more so that I can find old things that I've posted and things from a few friends. I want a real text search no "did you mean?" or anything.

Can this be done? Is there a packaged product to do it easily? How much might it cost?

Tired of remembering something I wrote and not being able to find it.

This doesn't address my problem with search engines at all. My issue isn't that I want privacy (though that might be nice) it's that I can't find what I'm looking for even though I know it's there.

I can't find it because the pages I'm looking for either aren't indexed or they are too low ranked to come up.

I can remember exact phrases, unique usernames that once would have pulled these results but now it's impossible.

I need my own full text index of the places I care about.

Problem:
Someone deleted the code that tells the elevator which floor to visit next. Write an algorithm to decide where the elevator will go. Calls arrive randomly for randomly selected floors 1-10 appended to the end of the callList.

Bad Answer: go to the floors starting from the first on the call list to the last.

Better (bad) Answer: go to the floors in order of nearest to furthest.

Better (ok) Answer: Just go up and down stopping as you pass each called floor

Norfolk Southern has a history of lobbying against safety regulations. Two years ago the union said that they were understaffed, that "just in time" BS was dangerous. And now an Ohio town is contaminated with toxic gas.

Everyone assumes aliens will know higher math. So much so that some people think encoding the orders of the first 26 sporadic groups would be obvious. (IDK why this is better than a list of primes)

But would it, though?
We name the groups by their orders, and think it's neat that exactly 26 are special in this way, like the 5 platonic solids.

But couldn't you do a lot with math and never really focus on these facts? It's not free from culture. math has a culture.

Imagining aliens that never really get digital (finger based) math. Their math is all analog, about measurements and estimates. Their computers don't have crystals, cycles or clocks.

They find discrete math silly and amusing. Because that's not how the world is *obviously* --

They develop better understandings of statistics and prediction than we've ever been able to master. But have no notion of anything like an integer or a bit.

This is the socks basket but… it’s not filled with socks.

What is something you learned in math that made you loose a sense of innocence-- knowledge that you can never unlearn that changes the world forever?

For me? That rational numbers are outnumbered by irrational numbers-- to such an extreme degree they are functionally as sparse as the integers-- or even the powers of ten.

Instead of saying "come to mastodon" link the person to a thread here where they would totally want to jump in and join the conversation.

"we were just talking about this here: ***link*** -- could really. use a perspective like yours."

It gives people a starting point and some people who are active and who they'd want to follow.

I don’t think QTs are as linked to virality as most seem to assume. Virality is an essential tool— One of the few ways to inject new ideas into the greater narrative. QTs are very useful, mostly used in positive or neutral ways and maligned for causing virality which isn’t even always bad and also probably isn’t happening.

I don’t think it’s your intention but it does sound like a call for controlled apolitical spaces. Can you see that?

“small close knit communities” is a euphemism. When is it applied— when isn’t it?

A dress code “no baggy pants” is a filter— not caring about usability? *also* a filter. These debates aren’t about tech it’s about finding parity between desperate visions of the people and conversations that belong.
