Sad news. I was cleaning the carpenter ant outworld and found Daffodil’s body in the grave yard. I hadn't seen her for a few days… but that's happened before and she always came back.
But, not this time— now she’s gone. So many great memories. People came from far and wide to see her lie in state! Now it’s time to return her to the colony graveyard. (it’s what she’d want.) Goodbye #daffodil. 😢
This has mostly been reported as "trans women banned from women's chess" but it's much more sinister. (as if it weren't already.)
ALL trans people are targeted by this ruling. Trans men will be stripped of all chess titles won, which can only be returned to them by “changing the gender back to a woman” (from the ICF’s ruling). ALL transgender chess players will be marked as trans in their files.
If you play or know anyone who does take a stand on this. It's ugly.
When I was active at the wikipedia there were a group of other writers who would follow me around and mark my articles on women and black people for deletion. They marked my edits CN even when there was a citation. They reworded everything I wrote to minimize the contributions of minorities to history, and hint at theories of racial inferiority. I'd just go to the library and bury them in more citations. It was kind of violent TBH. #threads#wikipedia#moderation
"Think they've gotten it all out of their system, Schatzi?" "Gee I hope so, Mieze! I don't like the loud noises. Not one bit!" "The loud noises are the least of what they've done." "Well what else did they do?" ".... let's not talk about it." "OK!" "You know what I don't like? I don't like that we keep needing to find a new butler." "What's a butler? Is that like a master?" "Yeah. Yeah. Something like that." "It's too bad about the last guy." "It is. Well, let's get searching."
Many people are surprised to learn that ants sleep. Even more surprising is the evidence that suggests they may dream (RAE is a sleep state found in ants and bees characterized by Rapid Antennae Movements and possibly similar to the REM sleep in mammals)
Ants sleep frequently and in funny locations. Generally they will rest their thorax and gaster on the ground, fold their antennae and be very still. They nap for 10min up to an hour. Queen ants will sleep for up to 4 hours at a time.
If you’re on strike and it’s disrupted things for “regular people” just know that there are a lot of us rooting for you— We get it. Media aren’t being very supportive framing the strike as all the fault of workers— as if we all have to take whatever we are offered & be silent.
The mood is different in the country than it was 15 or 30 years ago— No one is buying that striking workers are greedy. We’re all in this same race to the bottom and it’s good to see people fighting the current.
I think a genie should grant the wish of every "Return to Tradition" guy posting on the internet, and they should all awake tomorrow in the time-period of their choice, in the nation or city they romanticize most from the past.
There are many different sides to the "Dave Debate"
Should people named Dave exist? Should they have rights? Are they people at all?
I'm not anti-Dave, in fact I am a great supporter of Daves. I just think we need to ask some questions. But if you ask these questions people get so mad.
Shouldn't we at least have a sober reasonable discussion? What's wrong with that?
One idea we talked about a few months back was users designing their own algorithms for their feed. I'd like one that would show the most recent post (singular) from every person I follow. This would surface content from less frequent posters. Call it a "check in" page. This shouldn't be default, but rather a sorting option you could toggle. #feeds#algorithm#mastodonSuggestions
I'm starting to think twitter was... limiting if anything. I know most of ya'll don't care about follower counts, which is refreshing, tbh.
But, I think this little factoid is best used to reassure those who don't leave because they don't think they'll ever have the same amount of fun. And those like various creators who feel being connected is part of their job.
Suppose that I wanted my own search engine. I want to enter some URLs index of all of the content I've posted over a bunch of social media, wikipedia, everything2 and more so that I can find old things that I've posted and things from a few friends. I want a real text search no "did you mean?" or anything.
Can this be done? Is there a packaged product to do it easily? How much might it cost?
Tired of remembering something I wrote and not being able to find it.
This doesn't address my problem with search engines at all. My issue isn't that I want privacy (though that might be nice) it's that I can't find what I'm looking for even though I know it's there.
I can't find it because the pages I'm looking for either aren't indexed or they are too low ranked to come up.
I can remember exact phrases, unique usernames that once would have pulled these results but now it's impossible.
I need my own full text index of the places I care about.
Problem: Someone deleted the code that tells the elevator which floor to visit next. Write an algorithm to decide where the elevator will go. Calls arrive randomly for randomly selected floors 1-10 appended to the end of the callList.
Bad Answer: go to the floors starting from the first on the call list to the last.
Better (bad) Answer: go to the floors in order of nearest to furthest.
Better (ok) Answer: Just go up and down stopping as you pass each called floor
