Among the protesters, there’s a whiff of revolution – as well as barbecued Wurst – in the air. Not a violent, far-right revolution, of course, but a peaceful, populist one – against the anti-democracy and delusions of the establishment. Across the West, we’re seeing people who actually serve society – the farmers, the truck drivers; the people who know where the food and fuel and electricity comes from – begin to rise up against the green elites, to gently remind their rulers that society cannot function without them. Even in Germany – for decades written off as the quiet, ‘consensual’ nation; the one that ‘doesn’t do populism’ – people have had enough. Those who have long been ignored and demonised, and told to make do with less for the sake of the planet, are parking their tractors and trucks on the elite’s lawn. Long may it continue.

A friend of mine has recently been diagnosed with cancer, which is terrible but she still feels ok and is being sent through various rounds of testing at break-neck speed, which is good.

But she says that “On the upside, my medical insurance is paying out cash every time I have a procedure on the NHS rather than using them!” and I am really not sure how I feel about that. I guess no one is actually losing out, but it just feels weird. Thoughts?

You can think of these in separate buckets rather than joining them.

I know, that’s why I can’t put my finger on why it makes me uneasy. It would obviously be punitive if she/the insurance company were made to give that money to the NHS, so why don’t I have such a strong gut feeling the other way?

@restful Hmm. I have no issue with her using the NHS even though she has insurance, or with her having insurance in the first place. It’s the insurance giving her a cash reward for using the NHS that seems off.
