   A friend of mine has recently been diagnosed with cancer, which is terrible but she still feels ok and is being sent through various rounds of testing at break-neck speed, which is good.

   But she says that “On the upside, my medical insurance is paying out cash every time I have a procedure on the NHS rather than using them!” and I am really not sure how I feel about that. I guess no one is actually losing out, but it just feels weird. Thoughts?

     @restful Hmm. I have no issue with her using the NHS even though she has insurance, or with her having insurance in the first place. It’s the insurance giving her a cash reward for using the NHS that seems off.

     You can think of these in separate buckets rather than joining them.

     I know, that’s why I can’t put my finger on why it makes me uneasy. It would obviously be punitive if she/the insurance company were made to give that money to the NHS, so why don’t I have such a strong gut feeling the other way?

     @Flick Because you're viewing it as taking money out of the hands of taxpayers. It's the joining of two separate things in your head. If someone buys a phone with money that the government has given them as a benefit, it's a similar thing. You join them together in your head but they are separate things. One is the government giving a benefit (at the cost of the tax payer) the other is a personal decision by an individual about where to put their money.

     @Flick I assume it's being paid to use taxpayer funded resources that's getting you. If she had no insurance she'd be using the NHS. From the insurance company's pov they are saving money. You can think of these in separate buckets rather than joining them. Also, interesting idea I heard (from my feed probably) cancer could be parasites and a course of ivermectin could sort it out. Even if wrong, there's no cost in testing it.
