they put a lot of money into making various tech and entertainment things have better quality.

but they kind of figured that out in the 1950s. ever seen an Elvis movie? it's basically HD on film. with excellent colours. they figured that out already, without computers.

we've mostly figured out how to do it in digital now. but no real advance. they had good picture and sound in the 1950s for movies.

we have it at home now, which is nice, but not a real advancement. it's just cheaper now.

i'm not in a home cooking mood lately, and i'm not feeling culinarily adventurous, so i'm mostly buying ready meals. mundane but also comforting.

speaking of mundane yet comforting: sometimes i will put on the NRK evening news or radio P1 because they remind me of home, childhood, safety and protection. combined with a mundane yet comforting dinner such as meatballs in brown sauce with mashed peas, it makes the world feel a bit more normal, and not completely off its hinges.

yeah, you can definitely criticise the sub company CEO guy for violating all sorts of safety standards.

the use of a game controller? i mean, it wasn't even the source of failure. game controllers can take a lot of beating and they're a mature piece of tech at this point. using them instead of building your own controls is pretty common for all sorts of ROV stuff these days. at worst, the calibration's gonna be a bit off after a while, but a hard failure is unlikely.

the problem was the mechanical engineering and a structural failure of the vessel's hull, which likely couldn't withstand the pressure. the novel use of carbon fibre instead of steel for some parts of it has been stated as a possible cause of the failure.
