Meet Hubert Robert, one of the prominent examples of the early Fr*nch Romanticism. Don't ask me why he had two first names. Perchance, Fr*nce had run out of last names or maybe there was a strike or some other gay stupid Fr*nch reason, I've no clue. Robert wasn't great at painting people, but what he excelled at was... RUINS. Ruined castles, ancient temples, lying bare and waste, this was his talent.
What I find most fascinating about him is he depicts ruins just as they should be. Mostly abandoned, slowly being eaten by grass, without having been turned into tourist traps - tourism hasn't been invented yet, mind you! His paintings can readily be used as backdrops for medieval or fantasy computer games.
