Meet Hubert Robert, one of the prominent examples of the early Fr*nch Romanticism. Don't ask me why he had two first names. Perchance, Fr*nce had run out of last names or maybe there was a strike or some other gay stupid Fr*nch reason, I've no clue. Robert wasn't great at painting people, but what he excelled at was... RUINS. Ruined castles, ancient temples, lying bare and waste, this was his talent.
What I find most fascinating about him is he depicts ruins just as they should be. Mostly abandoned, slowly being eaten by grass, without having been turned into tourist traps - tourism hasn't been invented yet, mind you! His paintings can readily be used as backdrops for medieval or fantasy computer games. -

The 19th century is when Russian art caught up with Europe, leading to a huge outburst of great painters. It's just fascinating how - given the right conditions - you can have an entire culture transformed for the better in just few short decades.
This is "Christ's Appearance to Mary Magdalene after the Resurrection" by Alexander Ivanov. Gotta travel there to see it in person. -
