at one point people were accepting timed contracts from boing and would protest when the contracts expired. boing would say that you already built the planes we sold to the government, we have no more orders for planes to build. the protesters would whine that they were accustomed to a certain income and didn't budget for downtime.

as someone who has only ever done contract work this is exactly how it works for us. we only get paid when there is production to do, so long as there is production to be done, and people really kind of don't care about us outside of this exchange.

there is a lot of weird stuff that has been done to the employer-employee relationship over the decades
