however I feel compelled to point out that hardly any states on the planet have ever produced any computing hardware of their own to this day, so making something that even kind of works already puts you at the top of the pack

  @shibao as far as I know soviet espionage in computing didn't amount to much, and the fact that despite all their resources they decided to abandon domestic development just strengthens my point
  
  they did, however, build functional computers before giving up in the face of rapid western innovation

  @shibao there are close to 200 countries on earth, how many of them have designed and produced their own computing hardware from the ground up
