     @Meemoo @supersid333 character editor is allegedly saved to the servers, so you cannot simply start a new game to make a new character, you must pay to edit.

     @RehnSturm256 Lemme jump in here with some more context of this BS they pulled in Monster Hunter as well. I'm guilty of owning World and Rise as well as the extensions, but I think there are a few things that kept the MH and RE fanbase quiet(er).
     
     MH World and Rise were complete enough, but the stink of limited character (re)creation was always there. Here's the funny thing though. Since our save data is local, it is possible to modify all of our characters' visual data by modifying the save data. They sell character edit vouchers, so you have LIMITED character editing in a single player game. The fact that Crapcom never went after this mod is quite interesting, perhaps they knew they couldn't risk the bad PR since I'm sure they could bully and then pressure a legal case of impeding sales. I never liked it, but the game was complete and customizable enough that I think most people just turned to mod support and never really said anything.
     
     Fast forward to MH Rise, there was some more sentiment about how hard Crapcom was pushing microtransactions. Not huge though, and not enough to stop people from buying them or even buying the game entirely. The same character edit voucher is still in the game but I think very few people wanted to recreate their characters anyway.
     
     But now in DD2, look where the slippery slope has gotten. This is beyond just "a microtransaction," this is fundamental, game-function scumbaggery.

     @Suzu Yeah this isn't necessarily bad. In the old days you had locked in character creation. In Generations, your name, sex, and voice are final. I think the inherent facial features are final too, unlike cosmetic applications. This is less malicious and more of... the way things were.
     
     Fast forward though, the fact that they instead SELL YOU total character recreation rather than enabling it as part of the base game is where I have problems with it. In other games, you'd get clever solutions like potions of sex change or magic memory wiping to rename yourself, etc. But that's not entirely necessary as they can simply add an option to go and recreate your character. Players aren't stupid and we won't lose our suspense of disbelief when one day we decide "yknow maybe I want to play as a badass dude but right now I'm a chick, so I'll either start a new character or recreate this one so I don't need to change save files."

You can change your hair, maybe some tatoos/makeup, and that's about it. The other features you picked up when creating the character (gender, height, skin color, etc) are set in stone. I always thought of it as a design choice ("verisimilitude" is a really neat term that people, specially gamers, should learn), and always thought that they only added the character edit vouchers because people whined about it.

     @Cayhr @Meemoo @RehnSturm256 @supersid333 nah, I agree. But as I said, it started as a design decision, and turned this way because of a mix of player dumbness with corporate greed.
     
     I can't think of any game that has full character editing as a simple menu option. They all have, as you said, clever solutions like potions and shit like that, that require in game resources. Character editing tends to be made more difficult for many reasons. Suspension of disbelief, the psychological stuff of players being more invested in their characters if they can't completely change it willy-nilly, or even for padding the games (making you replay the game if you want to change things makes it so "players play our games for more hours", which is good to show on internal spreadsheets. That's also a reason so many games make it so difficult to respec your character's attributes/skills/powers).
     
     Capcom selling this solution as a MTX is the really scummy part (and preventing players to edit the save file themselves is the REALLY scummy part). But I assure you, that they only did it because they thought that they would make more money than the PR damage would be worth. And the only reason for them to think that would be by looking at spreadsheets of the sales of character editing vouchers in Dragon's Dogma 1 and the Monster Hunter titles and seeing that these items made a fuckton of money, because normies invaded and now gamers are even more stupid than they used to be.
     
     
     That's the shitty part, and that's the blackpill: there is no solving that. It doesn't matter if you complain to the companies, they don't give a fuck because they are still selling a lot of this shit. It doesn't matter if you say you will "vote with your wallet", because for each one of us who don't buy this stuff, there are at least 10 subhuman mouthbreathers who will buy.
     All we can do now is support the games and companies we think deserve our support and hope that the whole industry implodes in a few years and 70% of the current AAA studios simply cease to exist, then maybe there will be a possibility for change.

     You don't have to grind or do anything to do it

     Elden ring lets me do this at the very beginning as many times as I want yet I can't even delete my save file to start over in crapcom's game
