@coolboymew ah yes I'm huge fan of original atlier marie , maybe they'll record the voice again but with another voice actors I suppose, hope it won't so far from original
@coolboymew or add English voices by English voice actors, not sure about recent localization. well it's good game, if you lose the battle you'll lose one item from your inventory. two cute girls beaten by bandits in wilderness but all you lose is one spinach lol
However, "anime" animated TV shows were around, but not a lot of people recognized them as such. There were anime movies and OVA being sold, but it was very niche. Fansubs existed but it was people with very specialized equipment making subs on VHS and people making and sharing copies of copies of copies of subbed anime
Now, let's go to the early 2000s. Pokemon became a hit. Yu-Gi-Oh became a hit. The games, anime, etc. became a hit. People started having computers and the internet then, and started learning about all of this. Along the decade, Card Captor Sakura came out. Bleach, Naruto, One Piece. Some specialized TV channels started having anime TV blocks, etc.
However, TV here works much differently than it does in Japan. One Piece running for 50 weeks / 52 is unthinkable here. Also anime licensing was expensive. So a lot of the time they'd get a season (13-26 eps) and it would take a year or more to have more. People were getting impatient. Around then, Internet went from Broadband, it was more accessible, and sharing anime episodes, subbing them and eventually streaming got possible. One piracy site called Crunchyroll eventually became legal and fans could start getting anime as they wanted, as soon as possible, legally
This brings us back to the early 00, let's go with the PS1 and PS2. People who grew up with the NES (famicom), Sega Master System (Mark III) or even Turbographix 16 (PC Engine) got older, started getting money, and the player base got much bigger. Niche games started being more and more viable
However, during that time, English voice acting for Japanese (or even non-Japanese) video games sucked, the more niche it is, the more it sucked. Some games even went without to save on cost, because at the time, leaving the Japanese voices was unthinkable
There's a reason I talked about anime being more known and liked. That's because fans, around the Gamecube, PS2 and Wii, PS3, started demanding Japanese dubs. Because old dubs sucked, and the hardcore fans watch subbed anime, so they don't care, they want to have the original voice acting
Fast forward to today, the hardcore anime fans won. Even a hardheaded company like Nintendo, I can download the Japanese voices for Xenoblade 2. It's also an option in Xenoblade 3 and Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Also, for Tales of Vesperia, the recent remaster. When turning on the game, Japanese voices is the default
Now that brings us back to the Atelier games released on the Switch, PS4 and PS5. Well the Atelier series was still relatively unknown and niche until Atelier Ryza. They still released here, but without English voice acting, as fans of niche Japanese stuff pretty much doesn't care. Me included
@coolboymew >> they want to have the original voice acting thank you so much for detailed background for no English voices from Japanese content and why people doesn't wanted!! that's exactly the same to me , I always with English voice with Japanese subs for content from outside of Japan because feels something odd for Japanese localization(mostly they translate the English idiom to Japanese so very strange) and I think I understand that why people who likes Japanese content get Japanese study classes
@mimorinka yeah, exactly. For fans of the movies especially, they will tell you "It's best enjoyed in the original language"
There were a lot of debates (and still are...) about dubs vs subs for anime. I remember back then, people would say "but how would you properly know the tone of the sentence without knowing Japanese", but, you don't need to know Japanese for this, you can tell by the voice acting usually
This also reminds me of other examples. The early Yakuza games that came here. They removed the AV actresses, mahjong and pachinko. The fans demanded to have the game as intended. And now, we have all of these in the games!
Oh, and before I forget again, here's some funny localization stuff from the 90s
