There were a lot of debates (and still are...) about dubs vs subs for anime. I remember back then, people would say "but how would you properly know the tone of the sentence without knowing Japanese", but, you don't need to know Japanese for this, you can tell by the voice acting usually
This also reminds me of other examples. The early Yakuza games that came here. They removed the AV actresses, mahjong and pachinko. The fans demanded to have the game as intended. And now, we have all of these in the games!
