@beardalaxy@coolboymew Metroid Prime 4 release in 2023. New Zelda final trailer. Pikmin 4 available now. New Wario Land. New F-Zero. Super Mario USA 2. Urban Champion 2. Ballon Fight HD.
@beardalaxy@coolboymew They ought to star in a game where jumping mechanics don't make you want to slice your own throat. Last year I spent an afternoon with a friend playing all mountains on his NES Classic. Of course with level select that Nintendo kindly provided as they knew the game had awful difficulty based on terrible controls.
Yes, let's go, I'm in for a new Ice Climbers. Or as they are known in Japan, Ice Climber, because the woman is an accessory.
@Rasterman@beardalaxy@coolboymew Cemu emulates the Wii U well now. It's been open sourced and works in Linux too. Hardware reqs are pretty low. I have it running on Ivy Bridge cpu and 7 year old gpu, no problem getting 45 - 60 fps on BotW.
@coolboymew@rasterman yeah it's way too simple of a game. i'd honestly love a new ice climbers game that's kind of in the same vein as kirby and the forgotten land. just a really solid and fun 3d platformer that takes place on a big mountain. maybe with some puzzles thrown in. it could even be two player!
it's kind of crazy that, of all the nintendo characters, ice climbers made their way into melee and smash in general, despite only having one (really boring) game on the NES. was it really big back in the day or something??
@NettoHikari@coolboymew@rasterman yeah the wii u is THE best console to have if you want to experience nintendo's entire catalog from wii u and prior. really easy to hack. it's got the best DS emulation of any device period, for the sole reason that there are two screens, and the bottom screen has all the controls on it. there is no other experience like that.
wish i didn't have to sell mine but unfortunately was hurting for money at the time.
I do be lovin' my Wii U. I never understood the hate it gets. Mine is modded and can play Wii U, Wii and Gamecube games just fine. And of course N64 and other consoles.
@NettoHikari@beardalaxy@coolboymew I never got the chance to hack mine. I was playing Mario Maker, it froze, then I restart it and red light goes blue for a second, then back to red. It's been like that since 2017. :pepe_suicide: No one wants to try fixing it either.
@Rasterman@beardalaxy@coolboymew If you use .deb package distro like ubuntu you just download and it's ready to play. It's possible to use PS4/5, Switch controllers that have motion controls. Also works with more basic gamepads.
@dj@beardalaxy@coolboymew I don't know what those words mean; but I know about Cemu. It's just no the same if you don't have the clunky gamepad in your hands.
I haven't tried the Linux version. Don't remember why. Did it work like Windows or did it require compiling or something WEIRD like that?
I certainly installed all my Wii U games on Cemu for the day I go back to them, though.
@coolboymew@Rasterman@beardalaxy@mrsaturday directs are exactly how microsoft and sony do their conferences, the latest xbox direct dropped a full ass game which has always been a nintendo move
@coolboymew@Rasterman@beardalaxy@mrsaturday so do nintendo directs >heres a 5 year late indie port >heres a warriors spinoff >heres some EA trash >heres a port of a 360 game >new game added to NES Online: Scrunt >Arms DLC >AAA game (cloud version) ($60) >and one final thing >black screen >musical cues >metroid prime 4 has been delayed another 3 years >that's all!!!
meanwhile >Sony >Here's games that won't come out in the next 5 years >Games that are multiplatforms that you would just be better ti get on Steam >AAA Sony garbage >AAA Square garbage
@coolboymew@beardalaxy@NettoHikari If I were a betting man, I'd wager something similar happens to you, but not quite that. Years of looking have shown me all the HYSTERICAL :pepedisappoint.png: ways a Wii U can not turn on and there are many, and my issue seems almost non-existent.
I do love when I find one guy with the issue make a post and nobody replied. :loli_suicide:
@why@beardalaxy@coolboymew@mrsaturday You had me until ARMS DLC. I'm hoping we get an ARMS/Cooking Mama crossover where you play as Min Min running the restaurant.
@coolboymew@ROYALTY The switch was not announced until October before a March release. The "NX" project was announced two years before the Switch's release. I expect a "new console" announcement with no name and no details soonish. New console approximately March, 2024. I love the Switch, but it is on its last legs and everyone knows it.
I'm not even expecting a "Switch 2" so much as updated hardware that has a higher resolution display on the unit instead of 720p. And maybe an upgrade from the eye-fatiguing OLED that drives my wife nuts if the brightness isn't maxed.
@Rocket@coolboymew For such a weak handheld the switch has been a stupid success, the console doesn't even have themes or custom icons yet. Now imagine if Nintendo actually tried. Now that Nintendo recovered from the Wii U I can't wait for them to combine the versatility of the switch with the soul of a 3ds :firefox:
I don't think a fundamentally incompatible console makes a lot of sense right now but that hasn't stopped game companies before. So I hope it's just a hardware upgrade if they announce something.
I think they genuinely have found the sweet spot with the switch. People who want something else won't go Nintendo no matter what Nintendo does at this point.
@coolboymew Here we go *Iwata is promoted* NDS - Gimmick machine that was only popular because Game Boy lineage and ultra-cheap Wii - Gimmick machine, spurned core audience to become a fad Wii U - Gimmick machine, worst clusterfuck since the 16/32-bit shovelconsole age. Casuals predictably didn't even have enough brand loyalty to discern it wasn't an expensive accessory. Sold less than the Xbox Series, which is an absolute bomba and released during a worldwide supply chain collapse. 3DS - Gimmick machine with a bunch of high-profile disasters, sold less than half of NDS (no Game Boy bump to save it) *Iwata dies* Switch - Form factor people have been asking for since before the Wii was revealed. Just a good game system. On its way to becoming best-selling console AND handheld of all time.
@coolboymew Not at all! Every decision Nintendo made between the SNES and Switch was a disaster, held up entirely by Miyamoto games and Smash. This is evidenced by PlayStation’s domination of gaming for a long time (before fucking it up in their own right).
@natsock@Rasterman@beardalaxy@mangeurdenuage@mrsaturday@why I kinda am, but Sony had a long history of retarded ideas and the devs somehow stuck around regardless. The devs absolutely got stockholm syndrome to the level where Falcom was even looking to support Stadia over the switch at some point ( :aniwhat: )
@natsock@Rasterman@beardalaxy@mangeurdenuage@mrsaturday@why While the western devs literally fell for the gaming journos "muh kiddy" bullshit and didn't even attempt to try releasing anything on it. They did not release Psychonauts on Gamecube, citing "lack of interest" when it's a game that would have probably done the best on said platform (Sonic games greatly outsold Sonic games released on PS2 and Xbox by a fuck load, btw)
@Nudhul@Rasterman@beardalaxy@mangeurdenuage@mrsaturday@natsock@why And then you had Capcom "endless tests" (which are still going on, TODAY) where they release some fucking spinoff and go "Uhh, this is a test to see if it sells", they all sold magnificently and we got rewarded with MORE TESTS
@Nudhul@Rasterman@beardalaxy@mangeurdenuage@mrsaturday@natsock@why Anyways, the tl;dr is that the Yamauchi bad decisions, one of them steamed from the Sony Snes CD break up and not wanting to pay Sony for fucking CDs, lead to them getting fucked especially hard during the N64
The rest of it however is really fucking weird dev mentality that stated and plague during the Iwata presidency. The reality is that Sony also fucked devs hard, for example, SoA blocked a SHITLOAD of games. Apparently we would have gotten a PS2 Sakura Wars game early??? but it was blocked??? We didn't get the Megaman Legends collection on PSP because SoA has a "port should have x% of new content" policy, meanwhile Nintendo had a "publish whatever the fuck" policy during the Wii that devs didn't really take advantage of. And then you had weird shit during the Wii U like EA porting Mass Effect 3, a continuing storyline game to a console that had none of the other, at full price, which the other consoles got 1 to 3 collection at a discount. I have heard EA went around during the Developper's Conference going about how shit don't sell on the Wii U. And then you had Ubisoft having an ENTIRE FUCKING SUMMER to themselves for the Rayman game.... to delay it, and release all versions... At the same time as GTA5
Fast forward to more recently with the Sony dropping the Vita hard, PS5 looking sad and can't be bought and Switch selling a truckload, again, but it took time for devs to jump in (again). We got the odd small port devs actually trying to release stuff. Doom, Witcher 3, etc... And Wow, surprise, these games actually sell?!?!
And etc, etc, etc. It looks like a lot of devs, on the japanese side, got stockholmed syndrome'd for the lazy fact that "Shit sold on Playstation, and Ps1 and Ps2 sold a boatload" and that's about it
@Nudhul@Rasterman@beardalaxy@mangeurdenuage@mrsaturday@natsock@why Also, the state of game journalism was so bad on Nintendo's side, because doom and gloom at EVERY announcements, that Nintendo had to create the Nintendo Direct format. I believe even Iwata said so himself
The game journalism fucking sucked ass. You had Pachter terrible fucking predictions, every other week some smartass with a "what Nintendo should do" article while the whole website sucked AAA dick
@coolboymew I hate niggers and while that is my only reply, I have read and considered everything you wrote. Actually, I’ll add that the console business can be very unforgiving.
@natsock@Rasterman@beardalaxy@coolboymew@mangeurdenuage@mrsaturday >switch 2 and switch 2 pro why do nintendo fans think they know how much NPD costs and know exactly what would be a slam dunk? do you work as an executive for a billion dollar corporation? do you even have a business degree? do you even have a job??
@natsock@rasterman@coolboymew@mangeurdenuage@mrsaturday@why I honestly don't think Nintendo changed that much. A lot of stuff that came out well after iwata died was still in the oven while he was alive and acting CEO. There were questionable business decisions then, and there still are now. From going behind the scenes to shut down Project M, to not letting online Melee tournaments happen because of it being modded to do so during COVID-19 where nobody could meet in person. Iwata was closely involved in the development of the Switch as well. The Wii sold like a mother fucker and has some incredible games on it (Mario Galaxy, anyone?). The Wii U would have tanked Nintendo (due to horrible advertising, the games were really good) if it weren't for the 3DS, which still sold pretty well all things considered, and had a pretty good duration of support. Before Iwata, you had the GameCube, N64, and SNES, all of which had absolutely amazing games but suffered from some critical design errors/business decisions especially for the time (I liken the Wii U to them in a way). You had major IPs like Final Fantasy jumping ship because cartridges didn't have enough space, and that would continue through to the Wii and even today on the switch in some cases (which has led to the horrible advent of buying streamed games).
Nintendo has incredible games, often times with really unique and polished gameplay you can't find anywhere else. They have always made very weird decisions for their systems and sometimes that has come back to bite them. They are somehow always simultaneously ahead of the curve and behind the times. The rest of the market is typically what dictates how well something they put out well be received, and you can see that tenfold with the switch. Even though it is super underpowered, it fills the handheld niche insanely well and the games are focused on good gameplay, rather than the shit many people are getting tired of from Playstation especially. As a reminder, the Switch was basically fully developed with Iwata overseeing the project. If you ask someone what consoles they have, it is likely they own a Switch. Just as it was with the Wii.
@beardalaxy >If you ask someone what consoles they have, it is likely they own a Switch. Just as it was with the Wii. I would not venture to compare the two. The Switch has legs beyond being a fad for casuals. Nintendo could release a Switch 2 and Switch 2 Pro and print yen for another decade. The Wii was a fidget spinner.
>the Switch was basically fully developed with Iwata overseeing the project We'll never get the truth because it's Japan, but I earnestly doubt he was "fully" overseeing anything in the couple years leading up to his death.
@why@rasterman@natsock@coolboymew@mangeurdenuage@mrsaturday it's hard to say whether or not there will be a switch 2 or switch pro. they have iterated time and time again on their handhelds, but the only console to get an iteration was the wii with the wii u, and even then it was really in name only. nintendo is always cooking up something different and unique for their main consoles, for better or worse. given that the switch is a hybrid between these two, who really knows what they're going to do going forward. everyone is pressuring them into making essentially a beefier switch, but perhaps the logistics aren't in it for them in term of pricing it well enough while still having it be a more powerful machine (let alone talks of battery life).
my prediction is that they will come out with a completely new console that can play switch games but is not able to be played on the go, then keep developing games for the switch that are essentially boosted on the new stay-at-home console. i don't really see any other option for them at this point unless they want to release what is essentially a steam deck but locked down to nintendo stuff only, and that includes the price of the deck as well. i can't see that being a very "nintendo" move.
>my prediction is that they will come out with a completely new console that can play switch games but is not able to be played on the go
Doesn't sounds too likely. Consoles are more and more fucked by computers. The Switch being the Switch was mostly the portability + dockability and also why they're dominating Japan
@coolboymew@rasterman@natsock@mangeurdenuage@mrsaturday@why maybe "completely new console" is a bad way of putting it. an add-on for the switch, like an enhanced dock or something, might be what they shoot out. i really just don't think a portable system that's more powerful than the switch (at least, for modern standards) is in the cards at the moment. there are battery life and cost issues.
@coolboymew@hj@Rasterman@beardalaxy@mangeurdenuage@mrsaturday@natsock@why#gamergate wasnt about game journalism in and of itself, but rather how said "journalists" treated their audience with utter contempt and how big name asswipe rags circled the wagons to protect them from pushback while making shit up wholecloth about their critics revealing how vile the whole industry is top to bottom.
@why@rasterman@natsock@coolboymew@mangeurdenuage@mrsaturday the switch branding and popularity is way too insanely popular at the moment, so i'm sure they are being super careful to avoid another wii u situation where everyone thinks the "switch pro" is just an addon or something (unless it really is just an addon and not a brand new console, which i think would be preferable).
@natsock@beardalaxy@Rasterman@coolboymew@mangeurdenuage@mrsaturday@why I liked aiming with the Wiimote, that's the closest I've felt to mouse and keyboard aiming on a console besides just plugging in a USB mouse like on old playstations that I can't even remember which one allowed. Fuck moving a targeting reticle with analog sticks.
@Rasterman You should play Prime 1. It's really good and you don't actually need to aim, it's designed for auto-lock. That said, there is a hacked PC release that provides mouselook.
