   Everyone makes fun of me 'cause I learned from thrifty grandma and wash/reuse my ziploc bags, wash/wax my own cars, repair my gear, and wear my work gear to the point of becoming threadbare.

   Interesting how such habits skipped 2 generations entirely, the only ones who agree with me are those who hewed to the old depression-era memories about how bad things can get.

     @KingDenizen I'd believe that conspicuous waste is a sign of luxury or status to some of them. One time the great aunts were making fun of me 'cause I was willing to take "old" foodstuffs off their hand, saying it's "not worth the time taking it out of the can just to feed the chickens". Even feeding garbage birds is a chance to spend more than you have to

     @WashedOutGundamPilot @KingDenizen There's also a skill to be developed within "recycling" where dudes will make one failed attempt at sewing a patch on a worn backpack and just throw it away. I've definitely done that with electronics, but I usually attempt to fix them before trashing it.

     @veff @KingDenizen I honed my rat-life techniques living a few years in places where the options were making your quality cordura pack last, or switching over to garbage market chinesium crap that wouldn't last another season. Definitely appreciate quality when "just order another one" means you're hoping it doesn't get pilfered along its journey past 10 greedy couriers

     @WashedOutGundamPilot @KingDenizen A lot of it is a cost-benefit analysis where you weigh the resources/time to fix vs the money of a brand new part, and in the US most are willing to work an extra hour instead of wasting hours patching/gluing/soldering. It's short-sighted, where learning that skill might pay dividends in the future, but very few people have been in a scenario where they can't just amazon new equipment overnight.

     this is also why so many Americans live off fast food btw

     Guess I'm one of the few who was raised to save paper bags to use them as trash can liners when grocery stores still gave them out for free. My dad grew up poor, and while we didn't go as far as washing ziplock bags to reuse them, I get as much practical use as possible from my old gear when there's a way to do so. Just repurposed my old cell phone that no longer gets updates into a webcam, and my car is still going strong at over 300k miles.

I have shown my friends and family many many times how to fix common shit on their vehicles or shit around the house. They never just learn it and would just ask me to do it again and again and I said fuck it. I have a male cousin who took his car to the shop to change a headlight.
