Aral Balkan (aral@mastodon.ar.al)'s status on Sunday, 29-Jan-2023 18:33:42 JST Aral Balkan @banks It’s definitely not a good look for someone. Not entirely sure that someone is me.

Jeremy Banks (banks@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 29-Jan-2023 18:33:43 JST Jeremy Banks @aral you might want to go for a walk and reconsider. I don’t think this is a good look for you.

Tokyo Outsider (337ppm) (tokyo_0@mas.to)'s status on Sunday, 29-Jan-2023 18:53:26 JST Tokyo Outsider (337ppm) @aral There is privilege here, but are people not allowed to choose what they read now? What he should perhaps use his platform to call for is more content warnings — I too tire of those who think they are entitled to my attention on their top issue at any time simply because I open an app to communicate with someone else, and that by not giving it to them I am a "bad person". I pay attention to those issues, but sanity and self care demand that I put boundaries around them, too.

Aral Balkan (aral@mastodon.ar.al)'s status on Sunday, 29-Jan-2023 18:53:26 JST Aral Balkan @tokyo_0 There’s a difference between self-care and publicly pronouncing “I don’t care!”
(And worse, in an attempt to publicly shame does who do care.)
Some privileged white folks need to learn to read the fucking room.

Aral Balkan (aral@mastodon.ar.al)'s status on Sunday, 29-Jan-2023 18:59:40 JST Aral Balkan @ianbetteridge Indeed. And curation is a silent act.
This isn’t that.
This is publicly and proudly announcing “I don’t care!” It is a celebration of middle class white privilege tinged with an effort to shame those who do care.
It’s about as tone-deaf as you can get in the world we inhabit today.
And I don’t see how anyone who does care – or, worse, is directly impacted by these injustices – would want to be associated with an instance run by someone who so publicly doesn’t.

Ian Betteridge (ianbetteridge@mastodon.me.uk)'s status on Sunday, 29-Jan-2023 18:59:41 JST Ian Betteridge @Volpit @aral Yeah. While his use of "outrage culture" is bollocks, and I'm sure we wouldn't see eye to eye, it's his right to curate his timeline as he sees fit. The freedom to do that and not have it curated for you by a company that wants to push your hot buttons for engagement and ad views is part of what makes federated systems work. *Making* someone hear your words is coercive no matter what those words are.

Volpit :ac_thought: (volpit@fosstodon.org)'s status on Sunday, 29-Jan-2023 18:59:42 JST Volpit :ac_thought: @aral I agree with you about the fact that that's a privilege, but I also understand rhe research of a place where to relax a bit from everyday life and escape from anger or sadness.
I don't know, it's a matter of what you (want to) use social networks for I think

Aral Balkan (aral@mastodon.ar.al)'s status on Sunday, 29-Jan-2023 19:16:51 JST Aral Balkan @alexcleac That’s a very convenient straw man.
Let me quickly set it ablaze for you:
If I publicly declared that I didn’t care about the plight of the Ukrainian people and that I didn’t want to hear about it, then yes, by all means, they would have every right to shame me and I would 100% deserve it.

Alex Cleac 🇺🇦➡🇵🇱 (alexcleac@c.im)'s status on Sunday, 29-Jan-2023 19:16:52 JST Alex Cleac 🇺🇦➡🇵🇱 @aral I have a feeling that person was just attacked for reason of needing time to rest :/ I don’t think it’s really the best way to introduce a change: by shaming people in public.
It would be same if Ukrainians started shaming you for being at safe place. Because you have a »privilege« of living at country not being at war. It is a good thing to try to wear other people shoes before judging them.

Aral Balkan (aral@mastodon.ar.al)'s status on Sunday, 29-Jan-2023 19:21:00 JST Aral Balkan @brunospy He runs an instance. Those affected by the injustices he doesn’t care about and doesn’t want to hear about have a right to know that so they can decide whether they want to be hosted on it by him.
I’ll also save you the trouble of not being subjected to my unacceptable behaviour in the future. Goodbye.

brunospy@hostux.social's status on Sunday, 29-Jan-2023 19:21:01 JST brunospy @aral You're doing what I hated most on Twitter : QRT someone to your community to obtain reactions that often leads to harassment. Let this guy live in his own bubble if he wants to. You don't know him, maybe he's very active IRL and just want to relax on Mastodon ?

mijndert (mijndert@fosstodon.org)'s status on Sunday, 29-Jan-2023 20:32:44 JST mijndert @aral Jorijn is a great person who truly cares about his instance and the people on it. He doesn’t moderate the instance the way he filters his own timeline and if you think otherwise and drag him running an instance into this, there’s no helping you. Fuck you for calling a decent person out like this without any context and without knowing him on a more personal level.

Annie Hsh :coffefied: :ww:👾🖖 (fringemagnet@mstdn.social)'s status on Sunday, 29-Jan-2023 20:39:18 JST Annie Hsh :coffefied: :ww:👾🖖 @aral Definitely a prime example of white privilege here. It's not just the "I don't care" part, it's also the framing of any criticism of world injustices, violence and brutality, and climate issues as "outrage culture" , which suggests that people are just getting unjustifiably hysterical about issues that are of no importance. The wording here is revealing.
We can all curate our timelines accordingly without declaring it to the world, the framing and the condescending tone here says a lot.

Aral Balkan (aral@mastodon.ar.al)'s status on Sunday, 29-Jan-2023 20:50:24 JST Aral Balkan @sll He has every right. That’s very different from publicly proclaiming that you don’t care about social injustice and attempt to shame and silence the people who do as perpetuating “outrage culture.”

(sll@pouet.chapril.org)'s status on Sunday, 29-Jan-2023 20:50:25 JST sll - Macron destitution. @aral well I may not agree with his opinion but the guy has any right to manage his own timeline the way he sees fit. He's not talking about him moderating the server he manages, does he?
