When I say I hate how everything is political, it’s not because I think older things weren’t political, it’s because they were intelligently crafted and political.
Politics was woven into the story seamlessly, in a non-exaggerated, non-vitriolic way. It allowed you to see the opinion of the work (not necessarily the author) and also provided characters who had other beliefs (who were also not treated with contempt).
I will always prefer the subtly of subtext - such as what you will find in Star Trek - over the hit-you-over-the-head methods of modern works.
