Maholmire (maholmire@crlf.ninja)'s status on Monday, 06-Nov-2023 17:13:21 JST Maholmire The reason I ask is that while most that use *BSD will probably have some tiling window manager, GNOME's proposed removal of xorg support and how Wayland is implemented into contemporary desktop environments with the above Linuxisms. Unless maintenance of Xorg or a fork of it by the BSD people were to happen in the future, it seems very unlikely that people using those operating systems will have much in the way of variety in what to use. -

Maholmire (maholmire@crlf.ninja)'s status on Monday, 06-Nov-2023 17:19:58 JST Maholmire I've found the opposite personally. Had more consistent crashes on Wayland with KDE Plasma than I have xorg.

I understand that XOrg is older and more traditionally supported, but I've legitimately had better experiences with Wayland as far as features and things "just working" without requiring any additional setup or packages. :wayland: @BrodieOnLinux@linuxrocks.online

Maholmire (maholmire@crlf.ninja)'s status on Monday, 06-Nov-2023 17:20:00 JST Maholmire Could be that @BrodieOnLinux's Wayland propaganda is getting to me. Just that the possibility really does worry me whether these projects are taking the wider scope of the FOSS community into consideration when making their decisions.
While it is nice to have software being developed with Linux in mind, it isn't the only operating system out there and I feel it can be easy to lose track of that. -

Wayland is buggy on the Pinephone that's for sure.† top dog :pedomustdie: likes this. -

On the Pinephone web browsers freeze sometimes and I have to restart phosh from tty, I suspect it's a wayland issue becuase I see glitchy visual artifacts when the freeze happens, but my mouse still works oddly, and it's only corrected when dropping into tty, plus it happens with both Firefox and Qutebrowser, so it's not the browsers. -

I don't know, but I have a very serious "if it ain't broke don't fix it" vibe with this phone right and it's working the best since I first bought it 2 years ago. (I also learned all the tricks to deal with it's kinks and shortcomings).
I also use my iPhone a lot and it's UI and userspace is plain dogshit somedays. Phosh is actually better at certain things that iOS believe it or not.† top dog :pedomustdie: likes this.
