     Combination. Lots of pointless “patrol” sorties, but a whole lot of refueling missions constantly going. We have an insanely wasteful logistics system, more tankers than we know what to do with flying around the clock. At least we charge other guys for airborne gas….that’s pretty cool

     Well with these guys the costs are…..insane when they screw up. If they botch the drogue maneuver they scrape off that special skin coating on the F22/35/B2s, literally a half million dollar screw up in a half second.

     Most have health issues to my understanding, because they sit around in a sedentary job, and just live like slobs since they’re deployed all the time. Like college students

     I operate something similar but on the ground and with molten steel and it is the most boring part of the job. it's probably more difficult to drive a fork lift but people just think oooo big heavy thing that needs semi precision, must be hard to do.

     It’s diff. because tanker crews have a high operational tempo compared to the rest. They’re deployed all the time, and end up living like college students because they’re billeted in either a nice hotel, a shitty dorm room in the middle east, or a GI town in europe.

     They just get used to living like they’re freshmen forever

     There was a good article that I did not save and can't find about how the US Air Force and Navy were extreme consumers of jet fuel, to the extent that an aircraft carrier would need a tanker refill every 3 days or so. Since carrier pilots, even in peacetime, must practice landings to keep their skills up almost every day, then just doing nothing requires a huge supply chain presence. Aircraft carriers are hard targets, oil tankers are easy targets.

     Did I ever post that forum story from that guy on arfcom? It was some incidental little thing, where the old man designed and patented some part for a c-130 (?) and had been licensing it to be produced by a smallish machining company. They changed CEOs and the new guy started squeezing him out thinking they could just build it w/o the fee….and then the guy pulled his approval.

     Wonder how many little things like that go on behind the scenes, all these little drama flare ups that result in guys in the UAE looking up a needed part only to see “OOS- NO ETA“

     Im not saying theyre not competent. They get put behind a desk and then leave because they want too fly and they cant theyre forced into being managers. Theres a churn going on where guys fly nonstop for 4 years sit at a desk for 2 and then say fuck it ill fly for delta. All that training goes too waste as these frames get more and more hours and more and more shit breaks. Cant even tell you how often red xs were waived to keep up the flying schedule.

     Im also not talking about specifically fighters either. The entire inventory is running into these problems. Those fancy f35s are worthless if the tankers and support planes arent around and those are what are getting hit the hardest by this this stuff.

     I dunno man I used to run tower for DLQs and when the squadron CO would come out to get his deck hits he'd mop the fucking floor with the LTs, even after having been a desk jockey for 8 of the last 10 years or whatever. You could see drastic improvement over the course of a deployment.
     
     Might just be a rotary thing though. Airframe design is a lot more stable, the Navy has been flying some flavor of the SH-60 since the 60s and the current variant (MH-60R) has been in service for ~30 years now. Same deal with the Marines and hueys.
     
     As for maintenance I was a maritime guy but I assume it's largely the same in aviation, where your maintenance costs are driven more by your combat systems than by your hull/mechanical/electrical. If we got rid of these asinine COTS procurement philosophies and retvrned to field level repairables we could probably shave a lot of cost out of maintenance (this will never happen because that cost will come at the expense of Locksneed and Bell)

     This is actually good policy though. The Nips shrekt us in the air early in the war precisiely because their pilots had logged a shitton more hours and were better aware of the caps and lims of their hardware. Took a year of chipping away at their manpower, exploiting their hasty training of replacements, and developing new airframes before we were able to get a consistent edge over them.
     
     Also worth pointing out that there was once a time when American warfighting tactics and doctrine mopped the floor with the Germans and Japanese. There was a time when we were actually more competent at writing procedures and ensuring compliance with them than the Germans and the Japanese. Almost can't imagine it.

     In theory yes. In practice no. The flying hours go to waste because as soon as theyre certified theyre put behind a desk. The cost is also far higher. The maintenance to flight ration only grows and the force has less and less people and manufacturing capability. Theyre running the whole thing into the ground. Same goes with the navy and army. Boats are going way over maintenance schedules too keep this pace. Its unsustainable

     Almost guarantee it. A sortie is supposed to be an actual mission not just training. They throw out jargon because the guy is right. Most people have no clue whats going on so fancy language works. Sortie sounds important and big brained. If he said what actually happens. "O yea well we have pilots fly non stop in circles day in and day out so they can reach a quota" its doesnt sound so impressive.
