There was a good article that I did not save and can't find about how the US Air Force and Navy were extreme consumers of jet fuel, to the extent that an aircraft carrier would need a tanker refill every 3 days or so. Since carrier pilots, even in peacetime, must practice landings to keep their skills up almost every day, then just doing nothing requires a huge supply chain presence. Aircraft carriers are hard targets, oil tankers are easy targets.
