   I am hear to tell you that kids are not *that* expensive. There are a million programs with free stuff for anyone who will take it and there are always ways to get baby stuff from people. Have a social network. Grow a social network - more easily done than you think because mommies love talking
   
   Where it gets spendy is in *luxuries*. We have always fed the kids good quality food, and that goes up in price all the time for sure (big eye opener for me when milk skyrocketed in price during QE, totally radicalized me), but the main thing that become unaffordable are *luxuries*
   
   (Yeah, there are conversations to be had about vehicle considerations constraining family size but that's like kid three territory)

     @KarlDahl “expensive” is usually the teens though. People think each 16 yo needs a car, a full-phone plan, and some silly extracurricular to “get to a good school” that blows through $2k a month in outings and gear

     @WashedOutGundamPilot @KarlDahl I told an older woman with older teen kids experiencing financial problems after her divorce to tell her kids to bike or walk the TWO MILES to school instead of buying 3 cars for them, she looked at me like I had an extra eyeball.
     
     This is why I went hard in that cycling hellthread a few months ago, btw. This car culture is fucking insane.

     Children don’t see the lack of wealth or care, as long as you’re present and make an effort to be a positive influence in their lives
