   My suggestion is that when forge federation is implemented, we at @Codeberg should decide on how many accounts is to be our limit and close off registrations at that number (and maybe implement a one-in one-out system).

   Afterwards, the mission of Codeberg should evolve to focus on improving @forgejo and supporting other organisations in setting up and running their own instances, while ensuring Codeberg runs smoothly for currently members.

     We have an opportunity here to deviate from Silicon Valley’s dogma of infinite growth and demonstrating a more sustainable and cooperative way of existing that limits the growth of individual instances in favour of nurturing a sustainable ecosystem.

     @scy @aral the link is 404'ing because of lack of permission, which is ironic.

     I agree with the idea in principle, but the security part is a good point. Would it be enough to assume that someone who's savvy enough to notice an issue will also be savvy enough to already have a federated git account?

     Or perhaps forges can display a "sign up here instead" list when registrations are closed, with links to the top 5 open-registration forges that are federating with them...🤔

     @aral I can’t quite pinpoint it, but to me there’s a difference between “my Mastodon instance is full, you need to find another place to create an account on, if you want to comment on my toots” and “my forge is full, you need to dig around to find another one (that’s federating with it) to tell me about a security issue in my code”.

     @aral The link isn't working for me. I work in the semiconductor manufacturing space and sustainability is a big topic all of the sudden due to the the Chips Act (requirement for funding). Interested in any content of value on that front.

     It appears to be a link only usable by eV members, and I imagine they want more eV members so they're not going to re-publish the discussion for the public.
     So @aral probably shouldn't have shared the link, as now many people who can't afford a membership are excluded.

     @RyunoKi Codeberg offers a simple service and does it well. I’m still not entirely sure how Matrix works and find myself avoiding it whenever I can. So I think Codeberg will be fine :)
