   AMD Windows drivers suck compared to the Linux open source ones. How did they fuck up so badly with them?

     @shebang@freespeech.group They aren't terrible, I have just noticed small bugs. Nothing game breaking yet. E.g. random glitches in Firefox, windowed mode tanking performance more than expected, small issue with explorer when you would open the start menu over a video causing the blur effect not to be applied instantly (likely due to hardware decode)

     Old bugs that have to stay because things rely or are built upon those bugs.
     
     Linux has a "deal with it" culture when it comes to bug fixes. Windows has the opposite.

     @shebang@freespeech.group Never had these issues on NVIDIA, but they aren't a big deal. I only need Windows for small things anyway, it plays games fine

     @shebang@freespeech.group I don't think anything is stopping anyone in theory, they just wouldn't be signed drivers. Not enough demand

     @shebang@freespeech.group I mean the closed source AMD drivers have a few notable features, one of which being hardware encoding but it's bad compared to NVIDIA anyway apparently. But AMDs encoding is good enough for me and faster, I think there is hacky way to get it working with the open source drivers kinda... Just need part of the closed source drivers

     @fuggy Well, AMD is the biggest mover behind their own linux drivers, so they could sign them.
     
     You'd be surprised though, actually, for example nvidia's drivers are almost identical between windows and linux -- its only the interfaces that vary. I don't know how AMD did it, though.

     @shebang @fuggy Funny thing, AMD closedsource drivers are usually worse than opensource drivers.
     
     This is one of the main reasons why I went for AMD videocards. Nvidia went full nuts when they forced signed firmware, that killed the whole Nouveau development
     
     I think AMD closedsource driver is only useful for professional things, since contains lot more "workarounds" per-app/videocard
