@monsterislandcolonizer One Piece is still better-written than Dragon Ball or Fist of the North Star. there's a cohesive world and some real character development.
- cool_boy_mew likes this.

@monsterislandcolonizer and Toriyama himself would probably admit that he's a shit writer. amazing cartoonist, though. in the 80s, no one drew action and slapstick comedy as well as he did.
-
@noyoushutthefuckupdad What people like from Dragon ball is the good animation, identifiable style, and exciting fights. Plot-wise its probably the worst shounen ever made lol
-
@noyoushutthefuckupdad @monsterislandcolonizer Honestly, Demon Slayer is really down there. All these fucking obnoxious characters, man

nah there's worse

Agreed. I still prefer the First Dragon ball ark which is adventure/exploration/discovery of the world.
When you think about it, it goes like this
-Dragon ball: Adventure time ark.
-Dragon ball: martial art ark.
-Dragon ball: Save the planet from evil Demon ark.
-Dragon ball z: Save the planet from evil space monkeys ark.
-Dragon ball z: Save the galaxy from Real estate space xenomorph ark.
-Dragon ball z: Save the planet from evil bioweapon being made by RR-cyborb ark.
-Dragon ball z: Save the universe from evil space wizard and his synthetic bublegum ark.
-Dragon ball GT: Save earth with trying to make it like adventure time ark.
Am I missing something ?

@mangeurdenuage @monsterislandcolonizer damn, Waluigi doesn't fuck around
-
@monsterislandcolonizer @Suzu where do you go after fighting the guy who rules the entire universe, someone who was so colossally powerful that he was thought to be invincible?
you bring in his never-before-mentioned dad, then you have them get upstaged by androids.
King Cold looked cool, though. I wish he lasted longer.
-
@noyoushutthefuckupdad @monsterislandcolonizer @Suzu Frieza really got beaten up and then brought his dad with him to try and beat up Goku :guraKekw:
-
@monsterislandcolonizer @noyoushutthefuckupdad yeah, the first battles with the sayajins at the start of DBZ were pretty cool because there was a huge disparity in power level, and the fighters of Earth had to use everything they had and all. It was also the last fight where the human characters did something, after that they became mere cannon fodder as the series increasingly became about yelling higher and getting the power level at ridiculous numbers and having faster than light movement and still somehow needing 5 episodes to complete a fight.
The "daily lives" episodes were a time when Toriyama could write some more light hearted slapstick comedy, which was what he was good at, and explore the naivety of Goku. I agree that I wished to see more of it, and I think that, despite people really remembering the fights and stuff, DBZ is only as liked as it is because of these segments, which endeared the public to the characters.
-
@Suzu @noyoushutthefuckupdad Vegeta destroys a planet in his first appearance
That's all I have to say about power levels in DBZ
-
@noyoushutthefuckupdad @Suzu My favorite battle in the series is Goku vs Vegeta
The show really lost its way after Cell.
Although the 2 or 3 episodes where Goku was living his daily life (he and piccolo get drivers licenses) were pretty good and I would have liked more of that
-
@monsterislandcolonizer @noyoushutthefuckupdad Dragon Ball (with young Goku) is a pretty nifty exploration-themed anime with a cool story mixing adventure, action and humor.
Then, later on it started with the martial arts tournament arcs and IDK, it's like Toriyama realized he didn't really need to write a plot if he just kept doing over the top fight scenes, and this mindset kept going during the whole DBZ story.
-
@Suzu @monsterislandcolonizer the Piccolo Daimaoh arc is about when the series turned into the DBZ cliche of endless bullshit power-ups and beam spam. I like the earlier adventure stories better.
still, my favorite fight of the whole series comes a bit later, with Nappa and Vegeta. it's a phenomenal team effort that uses every last little trick the heroes can think of to defend their planet.
-
@monsterislandcolonizer @Suzu Cell and Buu arcs have some fun bits (I love Mr. Satan's kayfabe antics) but they are clearly the worst DB parts. at least, until GT and Super and Dragon Ball Minus came out.
-
@noyoushutthefuckupdad @monsterislandcolonizer @Suzu at least gt kept their character traits
Super is really bad, the last 2 arcs for it are the absolute lowest point the dragon ball franchise has ever seen since evolution
-
@noyoushutthefuckupdad @Suzu It was
Aliens (Saiyan's)
For-real-this-time aliens and king of the universe (Frieza)
Robots (the androids)
Bioweapon (cell)
Otherworldly creature (buu)
-
@noyoushutthefuckupdad @monsterislandcolonizer @Suzu because toei wrote it lmao
The manga was barely catching up to it and wrote their own version of it because toei doesn't trust Toyotarou at all :guraKekw:
-
@luithe @monsterislandcolonizer @Suzu Super had a loooooooooot of problems but the last few episodes of the Tournament of Power got my blood boiling (with excitement) (because it was surprisingly not terrible)
-
@noyoushutthefuckupdad @monsterislandcolonizer @Suzu @luithe The tournament of blue balls. I remember when the arc started and I just wanted the tournament to start, which led to the tournament going on and I wanted it to end.
-
@noyoushutthefuckupdad @monsterislandcolonizer @Suzu @luithe It's funny how Super started off with such dogshit animation that everybody memed on, and then had a final arc that looked fucking gorgeous, multiple episodes being borderline movie-quality.
-
@ChristiJunior @monsterislandcolonizer @noyoushutthefuckupdad @Suzu the explanation was already said, they were handling multiple shows at once at that point before focusing on super
Plus I really wish they just skipped the movie arcs and let the movies do the job so we don't have a a shitty version of them
-
@ChristiJunior @monsterislandcolonizer @Suzu my headcanon is that power levels are complete bullshit invented by Freeza's propagandists to make him look cool
-
@monsterislandcolonizer @noyoushutthefuckupdad @Suzu One of the very few consistent feats in DB/DBZ is blowing up the moon - a character with a power level of less than 150 can do it with great effort. A character with a power level of 300-400 can casually blow up the moon.
Super Saiyan Goku, in his first appearance, has a power level of 150 million....
-
@monsterislandcolonizer @ChristiJunior @Suzu even in-universe they are shown to be relatively unimportant and unreliable, and only stupid characters like Nappa swear by them.
which led into the next arc with Sneaky Vegeta, AKA best Vegeta.
-
@noyoushutthefuckupdad @ChristiJunior @Suzu I was under the impression that power levels were a japanese in-joke that got out of hand
-
@noyoushutthefuckupdad @ChristiJunior @monsterislandcolonizer @Suzu I thought powerlevel was the number of normal unarmed men you could take on / kill. They were using it when Raditz, Vegeta, and Napa showed up.
>His powerlevel is over 9000!!!!
>What 9000!?
Farmer with a shotgun has a powerlevel of 4, means he can take out 4 guys. Goku has a powerlevel of a billion, he could take out a billion people.
The same goes for guns. AK-47 could take on 47 normal men. AR-15 only 15. Oof AR bros.
