     @kroner It was a stupid concept. The users already have Instagram accounts. In fact, it's required to sign up. So why would they prefer to use a shitty text-first version of Instagram with fewer people on it and where the only topic of permissible conversation is about how terrible Elon Musk is? Threads was doomed to failure. Zuck is incapable of successfully bringing a product to market that he didn't steal.

     Many don’t really remember it but about 3-4 years ago a group of devs made a Reddit clone/alternative called Ruqqus and it briefly gained a surge of active users as Reddit was going through ban waves.

     Guess what the largest guild (subreddit) was on there? Well it was +WatchRedditDie, there were some other issues such as the head dev being too much of a janny (since they ran Ruqqus and coded it) and a bunch of political shitposters that turned it into a cesspit. It died maybe 1.5 years after launch?

     Turns out if a large portion of users come to an alt tech platform specifically because they hate a person/the other platform then most of the discussion becomes about hating the other platform and it eventually fails. Crazy how that works

     @kroner @caekislove good point. I remember some people migrated here because they hate Twitter. They centered their personality around hating twitter and within 2 weeks they're back there. You just gotta love watching it happened lol.

     I am actually working with 2 of the former Ruqqus devs on a project that's sorta like Lemmy but better UX with more customization for users/admins planned later on down the line. This time the goal is to make software, not make software and also be the head janny. Still working out a few kinks here and there but like. I got federation partially working a few days ago :acat_bop:

     Anyway I don't actually know if you can disable the slur filter in current version. I could probably go check by now, but instead I just set mine to an easteregg value. I wonder if anyone will ever find it.

     Lemmy still has a slur checker in their federation logic btw. The instance admins setup the regex it uses but yeah. I guess it's basically the keyword filter MRF
