It could be like that El-Melloi case files, where it hardly even touches on what’s going on in the greater world, just have the team try to fix the mobile suit problem of the week in a fun slice of life series

No, the destruction is only shown as colonies being bombarded by Musai cruisers and a colony dropping on an unspecified city in the opening monologue. I'm pretty sure it wasn't until Gundam 0083 that they specifically mention the city destroyed was Sydney. The details of the first six months of the war are extremely vague other than billions of people have been killed and atrocities were committed. -

Maybe. Gassing of inhabited entities in space with a finite body of air is an old and very obvious trope, Doc Smith used it for example in the core story of Triplanetary published in 1934.
Plus of course the Federation (at the time) Titans did it as well, they were perhaps much more the Space Nazis of the series with their dark blue or black uniforms … except for the Duchy of Zeon helmets which were clearly modeled on the Stahlhelm.
Does the original First Gundam TV even go into this gassing/extermination of Sides 1, 2 and 4 detail?? I don’t remember it from the movies, but by the time the series started it old news, heck Zeon had pretty much run out of colonies to gas…. Was banned by the Antarctic Treaty which the Gundam Wiki credibly claims became defunct after the One Year War but that still expressed principles the Federation held to for a very long time.
I don’t consider 0083 Tomino canon and as a general principle such treaties deal with the initiation of war crimes, not subsequent responses in kind once a side forfeits a treaty’s protection, but I don’t know if that nuance was known by writers back then.
See the WWII example of Germany and the US having poison gas, the latter in theater but not using it (Germany with its interior lines didn’t need to bother). And of course the Delaz Fleet very explicitly didn’t give a damn about the treaty and I read now about the old Duchy of Zeon (would you want to associate yourself any more with the Zabis than you had to??).
And of course this sort of thing gets … flexible in the exigencies of war. For once Imperial Japan’s military intelligence both got the details of the invasion of Kyuushuu right and was believed, blowing the initial plan for Operation Olympic. Those who didn’t know about the Manhattan Project were planning on liberal use of poison gas, and in one comment I haven’t tried to confirm had started to move it in theater. It was iffy since the type cited was prone to catastrophic polymerization, that releases a lot of heat and makes a bomb spontaneously go boom.
