   This product is just wild to me, it’s a total admission of failure for the kind of writer I hate the most. Undisciplined, uninspired, unenthused writers need to be chained to a desk to complete their craft, they don’t like to write more than they like mindlessly scrolling their goyfeed timelines.

   Something is so…..gross about a Hemingway typewriter being churned out at this price, all so “pro independence human rights advocates” can agitate against everything he was and enjoyed while feeling like heirs to his spirit.

   Also WTF is hemin’ways “official signature”?

     What’s extra funy is that there’s a kind of purity to a neo-typewriter that ONLY does word processing, the e-ink screen is a fine addition, but it would be best as a portable, packable thing. Seeing them call this thing “portable at only 1.2 lbs” is gross, that’s way too much for a bauble

     There’s a kind of thing I heard a term for but forgot, where people overbuy baubles and products as a way to motivate themselves to follow through on some goal.

     Rich guys will promise their wife they’ll learn to play guitar, and drop $2,000 on a domestic gibson, thinking that the money spent will ensure they look forward to practicing enough to follow through and play every day until they succeed.

     Also how is 100,000 words that much? I probably eclipsed that on my poast like, 2 years ago and I do this for fun

     Love how so much of this is geared towards the washed up roastie thinking she’s gonna be the next diablo cody writing screenplays about her “wild days”.

     This whole thing is perfectly catered to the roastie dream - nifty, sparsely decorated modern apartment, chic but modest old lady artisan outfit wearing her fave heels inside to complete the ensemble, coffee cup, cutesie notebook sitting beside her.

     In reality they’ll be sitting at the kitchen bar reheating a stale k-cup coffee as the try to blow the cat hair out from between the keys

     @nierenstein You gotta find something you like, where you need to put it into words before you forget it. I have to stop myself from writing more. You guys think I write a lot here, but when I’m doing briefs for clients about something I like I do 3x the length, because I like talking about the equipment and contrasting buying options for their mission.

     @Paultron @nugger You can’t even get unicomps, they only have the main models in stock. My boss was complaining to me because this super old keyboard from 1992 finally died, I have no idea how it lasted this long, or how he managed to keep it connected to his newer comps

     @WashedOutGundamPilot @nugger a standard cheap membrane keyboard without gamer RGB LEDs is gonna have an output that is so simple it is borderline analog when it comes to handling it. just sending out a byte each time. even if your computer doesn't have a VGA or serial input you can run the signal through N adapters without worry

     @Paultron @nugger This thing was OLD though, probably one of those old IBM keyboards. He hates everything else, kept turning down replacements. Given how technically inept he is I’m left imagining it’s one of the office drones secretly setting up his adapters for it, the thing only had an S-out plug

     Also I looked into their site a bit. They also flog a browser-based “distraction free writing environment” at https://sprinter.getfreewrite.com/ which really should be enough for people with that problem. It sucks, you can’t highlight text or insert the caret further back. They call it Sprinter because you’re supposed to just vomit out words always moving forward, I guess.

     But if you want your $700 typewriter to send your drafts to an email, instead of their proprietary Postbox service, you have to pay an extra $40 a year for Freewrite Plus. Such a deal!

     @PunishedD @RustyCrab I stumbled on this trying to fix something, turns out the subreddit for this is filled with people being irritated that the “cloud backup” doesn’t work how they think. People have drafts disappearing from local and cloud services, and only th emost updated models can even use the new stuff.

     It’s pretty bad, sounds like they don’t offer much for the chumps that DO pay for this crap

     @WashedOutGundamPilot @RustyCrab That confirms my suspicions, the entire thing hinges on that cloud service, unless you pay that $40/year to be able to email yourself (lol). I don’t know how you build a company centered around that but still fuck it up. I’ve used other minimalist services that just used Google Drive, for example. This Postbox seems to provide almost zero functionality, by design.

     My rabbit hole has led me to DOS 6.22 and Wordperfect 5.1 downloads. Now I’m trying to figure out laptop compatibility with DOS, or maybe DosBox. My curiosity is immeasurable and my day is ruined.

     My stock of old Thinkpads is already being used for other gimmick projects. Is that $200 DOS computer an actual product, or a proposed kickstarter?

     As I remember it, there used to be adapters from that old huge keyboard plug to the newer, smaller ps/2 connector.
     And then, in the mid 2000's, when USB became more ubiquitous, there were a lot of ps/2 to USB adapters, and since the keyboard signal is so simple, I remember we tried using a dim to ps/2 adapter and then a ps/2 to USB adapter and plugging an old keyboard to a newer computer USB port and it worked.
     So, yeah, probably an intern or the IT guy just plugged an adapter to the other and let your boss using his old keyboard while a monstrous contraption was hiding behind the PC.
