Yeah PHP forums never died. Even Xenforo is PHP. The issue is; php isn't trendy, forums aren't trendy for someone to write some shit in Rust or something (Josh claims he is but he's currently fighting internet warfare), and most importantly php at least for Xenforo didn't scale well.
>but phone posters killed the forum, the ui/ux just didn't transter over
I mean look how many retards on sites like KF were phoneposters, and 4chan especially. I disagree on that part, I think the part that killed it were the wave of new NPCs who wanted an "app" for it.
Centralization of Internet services mainly exists to promote monetization and other forms of control while fooling the users into thinking they're getting something convenient and useful for free.
@icedquinn@PurpCat@Rocket That was HHVM, which dropped full compatibility with PHP at some point after release of PHP7. Some were using it to speed up their sites, but nowadays there's no point in it since modern PHP is really damn fast and PHP8 got a JIT compiler as well. Not like the pure speed matters much when 95% of bottleneck in backend webdev is in I/O.
