     @Curvin my italian is fairly weak but this is a celebration thing, isn’t it? From the sound of it they’re pulling this out for a centennario deal to have a classic plane for shows. The first guy sounded like he bought it, which would make sense. Nobody likes being the chump holding the bag to keep these old things aloft

     There was apparently a single model of the plane that escaped being scrapped down back in '92, the plane was purchased by a collector, and now it is on it's way to be restored back into flying condition.

     You say that but there's a long long history of "obsolete" aircraft being pulled back into service because the new stuff either doesn't work or isn't fit for purpose.
     
     For example, during vietnam the americans found their fancy new missile armed spaceage jetfighters were being gunned down by obsolete migs armed with cannons.

     @AWIVR @Eiregoat @Curvin there was talk back in early march last year that they were going to use the AN-2 for something but I've never seen any sign that they actually did
     
     at the time it would've been useful for little logistical hops so I thought they might do that

     If it weren't for drones I would give biplanes a thumbs up for a close support role. They're already the preferred option for aerobatics.

     @Eiregoat @deprecated_ii @Curvin the Russians definitely have an ISR variant of the AN-2 that they flew in Syria and I would not be surprised if it was flying in Ukraine now too.

     @deprecated_ii @AWIVR @Eiregoat @Curvin the turboprop version is disgustingly neat, tiny landing and takeoff runs needed, can climb at retarded angles due to crazy power to weight and haul stuff out. Like a tough little helicopter. Good for small scale frontline logistics
     
     i know when armenia nad azerbaijan were fighting they were shoving a chinese made kit into the cockpit made specially to turn the An-2 into a surveillance or targeting drone. also it was found out in the balkans during the 90s that you can dial her speed back enough to get filtered as radar artifacts on most soviet AA systems (<~60 mph)

     @Eiregoat @Paultron @AWIVR @Curvin @deprecated_ii Fun dev history w/ socom going in and trying to get that once in a while. they got a couple OV-10’s out of storage and overhauled them, loved having the capability but AFAIk it got slapped down the the jealous AF fags whined about someone having fixed wings in inventory.

     Gotta protect the f35 program at all costs, after all. But whatever, for the best that they don’t have good light aircraft, they’d be happy to use those on us because it looks a lot better than striking ‘rebels’ with a JDAM

     Reminds me of a story I read about a pilot supplying the french foreign legion in north africa.
     
     They were pinned down in a desert fortress, but some pilot kept flying out to them, landing right outside, dropping off some supplies, stuffing a wounded guy into the observer's seat and taking off again.
     
     I think there's huge room for something like that on battlefields again but whenever militaries design aircraft the design requirements always seem to spiral off until it's a wedding cake of a thing.
     
     This is also a reason I think militias could possibly compete with professional armies if they were allowed to buy their own equipment to fulfill loose objectives.

     I wouldn't waste them on that, I would use them to fly low and slow behind my own lines to shuffle troops around or rapidly resupply forces. like helicopters but more efficient and less likely to break down
