I hate to break the bad news to him, but his hardware is just too off brand and that's why he's getting bad video driver support. Wayland is not fixing anything, it's just better at using LLVM for video stuff (CPU rendering). I know this because I have a rockchip arm64 that for whatever reason the Lima driver in Linux won't work with it. So I used sway on that board and yes screen-tearing went away, but CPU usage went way up, because it was using CPU rendering for video. A lot people don't realize that Linux's video driver support is still kind of half baked and a lot of CPU render tricks are used behind the scenes.
@charlie_root@PhenomX6 Does Wayland have features for touchscreen users, such as the Pinephone? Wayland may have some good features, but it’s still not fully stable yet and we shall continue to stay with X11.
@james@charlie_root@dcc xorgs security holes existed due to its architecture from the 90s namely due to its history of being used in networked workstations.
@dcc@charlie_root@PhenomX6 Well maybe Wayland wasn’t really necessary after all. Neither would’ve been my AMD card, or a reason for any applications to be Wayland-only. We should’ve all learned to live with Xorg. It remained stable and didn’t have security holes, right?
@PhenomX6@charlie_root@dcc Maybe that’s what Wayland tried to fix out of many things. It’s more “modern” because it was redesigned without the old purpose in mind.
@james@charlie_root@dcc well if you talk to boomers they'll tell you x11 is why desktop Linux never happened and will point to Android, apple, iOS, and ChromeOS.
Xorg security problems are usually physical access only exploits, not remote. And the big ones have been found and fixed. A lot of people are operating off bugs found 7+ years ago (that were fixed) to make current decisions. You are more likely to get pwned remotely via a zeroday in your web browser than X11.
@dorkbsd@charlie_root@dcc@james or even older "exploits" like forcing windows to render on someone else's workstation and similar, back when unix boxes also were known for remote root exploits.
That was one I haven't experimented with myself but I've read stories about it happening in the days of sparcstations.
@dcc@charlie_root@PhenomX6 Maybe it’s because there aren’t that many minimal/hackable wayland compositors. There is sway and wayfire but they aren’t as customizable as some of the X11 window managers such as AwesomeWM.
@james@charlie_root@dcc there's also years worth of x11 window managers and desktop environments and you can still use something like CDE on modern Linux
@PhenomX6@charlie_root@dcc@james >android just linux kernel, everything else is custom > apple, ios it focused on giving a good experience and apple doesn't pussyfoot around when they want to get rid of something
@victor@paulo@bronze@deprecated_ii Wayland doesn't work fully with my graphic tablet even if it draws quicker. Wayland kde has a broken control panel for it, the devs know, it's not fixed.
@paulo@PhenomX6@bronze@deprecated_ii I've been trying Wayland with GNOME...Just a basic Ubuntu install, nothing fancy about it. About as normie as it gets, Linux-wise.
It just randomly freezes all the time, sometimes for a minute, sometimes permanently until I hard reset. Xorg never did that.
>wayland was definitely not ready for prime time to be fair to all the gayland users I did try it out on KDE earlier this week and the experience wasnt too bad, there were some visual glitches with one of the menus and the firefox icon didnt show correctly on the taskbar (KDE bug from what ive seen), but everything else seems to be working correctly (as in it puts the windows on the screen) i just hate the whole push for it, it reminds me of the rust evangelism and it doesnt help that its the same low-T / troons pushing for its forced adoption
@PhenomX6@victor@paulo@bronze@deprecated_ii Not to mention a lot of times the retardation and issues attributed to x11 and xorg are in fact systemd.udev retardation and issues, amazing how eudev is way better on the regard of properly reporting devices.
@hakui@PhenomX6@deprecated_ii I never fail to laugh when I hear this dude's falsetto LMAO Dont even get me started on his friend fox"girl" luna :jahy_laugh:
@hakui@bronze@deprecated_ii you can tell it's low t as fuck because real programmers have either racial slur filled streams or just silent as they're coding and maybe talking to chats.
