     @Nudhul @PunishedD back when my EMS training wasn't a distant memory I had that on my resume because I was working in heavy industry and it seemed relevant
     
     as an office worker I wouldn't mention it

     @deprecated_ii The thing that gets you a job is being cool enough to work with, the certifications are just the minimum buy-in in order to be considered for the role. And if you come recommended by another cool person those can be waived too!!

     @WashedOutGundamPilot @deprecated_ii A certification or a college degree is a kind of recommendation, if you think about it. The company wants someone to vouch for you.
     The high value placed on the latter is mostly due to how much status we place on the institutions granting them.
     
     I think it's interesting to think of college not as a place where you learn useful things, but as a place that bestows you the status of college-degree-haver, effectively putting you in a higher social class.
     This is how people tend to think of college even if they don't say it explicitly

     @rein @deprecated_ii College - at least with the right major - tells me that you have some measure of work ethic, study capability, and memorization capacity in you. It’s like a learner’s permit for more demanding work.

     Now that colleges are easier than ever that value wanes, too.

     @kuon @WashedOutGundamPilot @rein what I would do these days is blast through the most bullshit-free degree available from a regionally accredited online school -- can be done in less than a year -- then transfer to whatever school I wanted my "real" degree from. most places will waive all the gen ed requirements if you have at least an associates degree already
