Bricky (thatbrickster@shitposter.world)'s status on Saturday, 04-Jan-2025 22:42:19 JST Bricky @raccoon Either a PSSD or a stick that uses SLC memory like the ones Sonizoon and eVtran make. How much storage space do you need? -

I recommend samsung for ssds or flash drives, their flash storage chips are usually quite performant and long lasting. -

Yeah that will last longer and be significantly faster on anything that supports USB 3.1+. If the size isn't an issue, still fits in your pocket though. You can get those enclosures for cheap on like AliExpress. -

Dawg USB 3 is capable of 10 gigabits per second, slower than PCIe sure but it will be faster than any flash drive. -
翠星石 (suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com)'s status on Saturday, 04-Jan-2025 22:49:27 JST 翠星石 @thatbrickster @dushman @raccoon That would really be a waste of money, as USB 3.0 is slower than PCIe.
A M.2 SATA SSD in a USB enclosure would be acceptably fast. -

Can you stop being extremely pedantic for 5 seconds? I'm talking about those small consumer USB flash drives obv. -
翠星石 (suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com)'s status on Saturday, 04-Jan-2025 22:53:04 JST 翠星石 @dushman @thatbrickster @raccoon A M.2 SATA SSD plugged into USB 3.0 is a flash drive, as the SSD is made out of flash.
The differences between a usb flash drive and a SATA or NVME flash SSD is poorer vs higher-quality proprietary flash control software and a single lower quality and slower NAND vs higher quality and faster NAND chips. -

Also raccoon has an old m.2 SSD he can reuse for this, an enclosure alone is gonna be cheaper. -

FREE SOFTWARE.
Many normies should be scared off from using computers (it'll be better for them tbh), but of course the government and proprietary software companies can't let that happen. -
Bricky (thatbrickster@shitposter.world)'s status on Saturday, 04-Jan-2025 23:01:05 JST Bricky @Suiseiseki Both @dushman and I have already given the best answer; reusing an old drive is cheaper and most likely faster than a thumb drive.
I feel sorry for @raccoon. He's probably muted this already, should if not.Dushman likes this. -
Bricky (thatbrickster@shitposter.world)'s status on Saturday, 04-Jan-2025 23:01:06 JST Bricky @Suiseiseki Let me end this tangent by saying eSATA Did Nothing Wrong and is the ideologically superior option.
Let's answer the original question, please. The answer depends on storage space as speed is somewhat correlated on what is needed.

翠星石 (suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com)'s status on Saturday, 04-Jan-2025 23:01:06 JST 翠星石 @thatbrickster @dushman @raccoon eSATA does have multiple problems tbh.
Hotplug SATA with included SATA power should have been made the standard interface for storage ago tbh.
The Thinkpad T500, R400, R500 and W500 implement it, but pretty much no other laptop does and it's rare for desktops other than for certain server motherboards? -

I use both, no difference for the end user if you ask me. The fact that someone can make a proprietary fork of permissive licensed software I use doesn't take away any freedom from me. -

Lol It's not the same thing. If you can view the code but not modify and redistribute it then it's just proprietary. -
Bricky (thatbrickster@shitposter.world)'s status on Saturday, 04-Jan-2025 23:04:57 JST Bricky @dushman In @Suiseiseki's mind, 'open source' can mean source-available under a proprietary licence. -

Meh, I use FOSS for mostly pragmatic reasons anyway. The more the better, whether it's made by enthusiasts or a corporation. -
翠星石 (suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com)'s status on Saturday, 04-Jan-2025 23:07:10 JST 翠星石 @dushman @thatbrickster @raccoon "open source" is about bootlicking corporates, who don't like to hear about the word of freedom and therefore such movement seeks to silence such discussions.
Also, for every single "open source" project, if adding proprietary software would give any technical benefit at all, such proprietary software is always added and never removed unless and until it becomes totally obsolete. -

Bleh, no point arguing semantics. Your definition is fundamentally different.
What do you even mean by "natural meaning"? -
翠星石 (suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com)'s status on Saturday, 04-Jan-2025 23:08:51 JST 翠星石 @dushman @thatbrickster If the source code is publicly viewable, all the criteria for the natural meaning of "open source" has been met. -
